As you all know Meg is now profoundly deaf. So I've been training her to respond to hand signals. We go to the park, and she's off lead until I spot someone in the distance (I've now got better at seeing anyone before Meg :)). Put her back on lead, make her sit by pointing at her bum, and when she spots them I stand in front of her, mouth stay, and keep my finger pointing at her. Bless her, now if she sees anyone she immediately sits and stares at me. Doesn't make any attempt to run off to them. I'm so proud of her. Labs are so intelligent.

Oh bless her , it is really useful, even for hearing dogs, to understand visual commands as well as spoken ones , well done to you, and Meg too of course :)

    Great work :)

Very handy to have a visual and a verbal/noise cue for everything. The visual cue seems to be the one they attend to the most though..

Thanks everyone. I thought it might be difficult seeing as she's deaf and also her age but no, she learnt quickly. And yes, she got an extra treat and gold star, won't tell you what treat was, it was a bit naughty. Oh alright then, it was a digestive biscuit. :-[

I am so proud of her. She's always wanted to please and that helped massively at the beginning when she was a pup and she's still the same now.

I feel a lot more relaxed and comfortable now when we're out walking cos the one thing I didn't really want to do was to keep her on lead all the time, she's not used to it, but now I don't have to. Yippee.

How amazing is that! Well done! ;D

I tend to forget how intelligent Labs are amongst other dogs of course!

I'd have given her the pack of digestives...just joking ;)

    Keep up the good work!
