I work in a small team of 5, two of the others have dogs but those two are verging on being unpleasant. They don't encourage me or join in the joy of my puppy planning - or, in fact that I am getting a puppy at all! After several rude comments, one of which is how hilarious it would be if, after all of the months of looking forward to my pup, I then found I didn't like it (that person actually Fagan-like rubbed his hands together with sinister glee), I no longer feel I can talk about my pup. Any enquiries from them are usually a prelude to a micky-taking session. Thanks for listening - just had to get it out!
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Oh that's awful! I have a friend who totally hates all animals and can't even stand to have a Penny looking at him when be comes to the house - I'm not even exaggerating! She looks in his direction and it's "get that dog away from me". It can be really disheartening and really drag you down when it's going on all the time. Unfortunately I've just had to accept the fact that none of my friends or work colleagues are as passionate about any animals as I am about dogs (I no longer work in rescue due to financial issues of being on minimum wage ) That's terrible if even the dog owners are like that though - have you told them that you don't feel they're being very nice to you about it? Thank goodness we have places like this where we can talk to like minded people
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Welcome to the forum, Jane! Tell us all about it and your lovely puppy...we can't hear enough about it. And ignore those other people - they don't matter, they are rude and insignificant and don't deserve to hear anything about your lovely little bundle of joy (and complete life-disruption!) that is about to land on you! Looking forward to hearing all about it. Have you chosen a name yet?
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Thanks! So nice to hear a nice voice, thanks, I have told one of them. It's a bit like bullying, a bit worse than not liking dogs because they both have dogs. It really makes me uncomfortable. Grr Then again, it may not be personal, I think they are just those kind of people, looking to make anyone feel out of sorts. I just don't understand why, like you say, maybe I just need to accept that's how they are and take the water off a duck's back attitude. Feeling brighter
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Oh thanks Rosie, She is 3 days old and not sure of a name yet but it might be Chepi (Native American Indian for "fairy"). She is chocolate and field line. I am massively excited and have been preparing for months! Can't wait!
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Oh gorgeous! We got our beautiful boy Pongo ten weeks ago - he is now twenty weeks old. It has been a roller-coaster ride.... things I thought would be hard have been easy, things I thought would be easy have nearly driven me insane.... but this forum is fantastic, lots of really sensible advice and reassurance from lovely people. I've been looking back over some of my old posts from the last ten weeks....I'd forgotten just how much I needed help a couple of times, with the most ridiculous things! Feel free to browse and see just how pathetic and over-anxious I was.... ;D Really quite embarrassing... You are going to have a lovely time with your puppy. Enjoy, and tell us all about it!
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Hi Jane, People that behave like this are typically fairly insecure and try to make themselves feel better by belittling others. Just rise above it. If they are really getting to you then just imagine them sat there in their underwear - that usually dissipates any bad feelings and brings a smile to your face
Re: Some people get right up my nose! jane i was one of those that would never listen to you talking about your pet, that was before i got my fist ever dog, now i talk about him all the time showing everyone photos of him, they get bored of me, but hey ho welcome to the forum, hope to hear all about your new pup, from me and jasper 17 month old black lab
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Well, we are always happy to hear about your excitement over your puppy...we share it, in fact!! So just ignore those people and come on here, you'll find plenty of kindred spirits. I do know what you mean, in my family one side of it are completely cat people and the other half really don't like pets (especially dogs)... Sigh. Love your potential name choice - how did you come up with it?
Re: Some people get right up my nose! I came up with Chepi because originally I considered getting a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They come from Chesapeake Bay in America in Washington I think. So I was looking for a name apt for that part of the world. I went to see a Chessie bitch but at the same time saw a field line lab and fell in love with her. She was 6 months old but not for sale. So, I changed my mind and started looking for a Labrador. However, I kind of like the name still! It means Fairy.
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Sad old world where people seem to gain pleasure on p***** on someone else's parade. Don't know what makes them tick. It is going to be a member of your family, of course you are excited and want to talk about it. Some come and chat with us. At least you always know where you are with a dog.
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Those people don't seem to take much joy from the idea of dogs, so I feel sorry for their dogs. Just ignore them, and don't talk about dogs to them if they can't manage it in an adult way. Talk to us instead because we want to hear all about your puppy!!! If we worked with you none of us would get any work done, ever
Re: Some people get right up my nose! I'm always sad for people who can't celebrate the success, happiness, or good luck of others - it means they spend their lives in some kind of horrible "if other people are worse off than I am, I'm not so bad" state of mind. Very sad. Smile, be pleasant, don't engage too much. Get your work done, then come talk to us - we are SO going to love, and celebrate, your wonderful time getting your puppy!
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Brilliant! Thanks everyone - I am going off to work all warm and fuzzy
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Jane there's nothing more that I can add to what has been said already ,you are most welcome on this site and more than welcome to talk about your puppy as much as you want.nothing gives me more pleasure than to know that someone really loves and cares for their dog,and I'm pretty sure that is the same for all of us on here. Sorry you have to work with such unpleasant people.....they are probably just really envious that you have such joy in your life when they are miserable clumps and not even their poor dogs can cheer them up! Can't wait to see some puppy pics, are you going to visit them soon? Best wishes Angela x
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Jane, I have to deal with this from my mum Harley is 9 months old tomorrow and in all that time she came to my house 6 weeks ago. Prior to this she was always making comments about how dirty they are, how they smell, about how I wouldn't leave her in the evening if I had been at work during the day etc etc. since she met Harley, she now actually asks how she is and brought her a ball on a rope. Believe me, this is massive for my mum. It is difficult when you are so excited and people make you feel bad. Try and rise above it and come and tell us all about your pup. This forum kept me sane when my family were horrible about me getting a dog.
Re: Some people get right up my nose! Hi Jane, keep on talking as everyone has said we love puppy chat Thankfully I am surrounded by dog loving people so I can talk about my dogs all I want so I can't imagine how awful it must be to work with people like you have to . I always think people like that are fishing for a reaction so I wouldn't talk about your puppy at all to them and they will soon get fed up so TALK TO US. Don't be down hearted you have everything to look forward to bringing a new puppy into your life so leave the nasty sad people behind. Have a lovely day. xxx
