Dexter has never had ear wax or dirty ears.....in the last week I've had what I would call a substantial clean out as there was a lot visible......certainly it seems a lot when previously there has been none and ive had another clean today although only a little bit today.its dark brown and he isn't bothered,no head scratching ,shaking,he didn't even wake up when I was cleaning them.I've just rung the vet and booked an appointment 'just in case' as we travel again tomorrow but I'm waiting for her to call me back.
Any advice on what's normal wax in ears.....googling says the brown colour could mean there's blood in it and so indicate an infection?.....but he has no other symptoms.if we weren't going away I would just be watching it for now .....
    Thankyou all x

It doesn't smell Kate ,I really don't think it's anything to worry about but something has changed that he's getting it.....if I was here with him Id watch and wait but not fair on him or his sitter if it developed into something next week .....got an appointment for 6.30,they are only 15 mins away so nothing lost by getting it checked, thanks for replying x

I think I'd get dark brown ear wax looked at too. Mites can create dark brown ear residue, particularly if it is gritty or sandy in texture. Quite easy to treat though, so not a worry, but definitely worth a quick trip to the vets.

Lordy....2 health posts in one day and I'm going away tomorrow :'( :'( :'(

Ear diagnosis is a yeast infection......makes sense,it's very humid here this time of year,he gets hot when he is outside, picks up a lot of dust and grime.,not much air gets in there.....all conditions perfect I guess!

Vet says its not serious......obviously I'd done the worse thing and cleaned his ear ::) .so she couldn't see the muck for herself ::) I nearly died when she shoved the earbud down....so perturbed was I she had to go and get the 3d model of a dogs ear and show me exactly where the earbud was reaching....
Im so lucky my Dog sitter is lovely, along she came and got fully trained on how to do the drops and massage .....and isn't phased by it at all ( she now has teeth clean ,eye AND ear drops and tail dressing to deal with) big present heading her way for sure ! I've said before how lovely my vet is.....the practice is 15 mins from my house and she's given me her mobile and said if Betty ( the sitter) is struggling with anything she will pop round,gratis....gift for the vet me thinks too ....

Your post has just made me jump up and have a good look/sniff at Bess's ears -all clear. I'm glad you sorted it out before your trip now you can enjoy without the worry.

Ah I AM very lucky with help I have over travel times, dont think I could do it otherwise,kenellomg/boarding wouldn't work for us in Dubai
You aren't a bad owner at all Lisa!dexter is funny,he's not a cuddly dog but he does seem to like us to go all over him ;D in the evening he comes and lies by us and rolls over and puts all his legs in the air.....(standard lab pose, all his bits on show ) can be disturbing to visitors! ;D ...and lies while we give him massage time ;D...
Alice,Dexter has been with us 7 months and I've only ever had to wipe out a bit of sand/ dust.....I could tell straight away that something was different, you'd be able to tell and if it was anything serious I believe they shake their heads and of course scratch!
