Hi, I know we aren't meant to name brands but Amy is in Purina beta and never finishes a bowl. So I am thinking of changing. I know the beta has quite a high cereal content. What should I change too? Send ma message if you dont don't to name on here.
Re: sorry....puppy food. I don't know anything about brands in the UK - but are you happy with Amy's weight, coat and energy levels? If all those things are looking good, then she may just be full... I have always found that the quantities given on bags of food seem to hugely overestimate the amount that a Labrador needs - they are pretty efficient at using their food and do not seem to need the quantities that other breeds do (even though most Labs will eat till they bust). There are heaps of premium brands, but different dogs seem to do well on different brands (though most dogs will do well on any brand). If you have found something that works (other then her not finishing every scrap) then it may be worth sticking to it
Re: sorry....puppy food. Yeah, she is very healthy and growing. Now I think about it, the amount recommend is alot. And it does swell up when wet so it will do that in her tummy too. These puppies are a worry! :'(
Re: sorry....puppy food. It's hard when so many choices confront us and we just want what's best for our dogs There are so many foods out there! But it sounds like she is going well on what she is getting now
Re: sorry....puppy food. Not finishing food.... that's not something I have experience with. I've put a high catch on the food cupboard door, if Charlie ever got in he'd eat until he exploded. I do worry about the amount too though, and find the packet confusing with adult weight estimates needed etc. Although I am getting more confident about deciding whether or not Charlie looks ok. I searched and searched and searched for advice on the best food but didn't get anywhere - in the end I just asked the vet whether what the breeder had him on was ok, and since the vet said it was a good quality food and Charlie didn't seem to have any problems, I just stuck with it.
Re: sorry....puppy food. I'm the same with the weight guidelines,I didn't get a satisfactory explanation from the vet or vet nurse as to why it makes sense for the amount guidelines for be for the adult dog weight when you have a 12 kg puppy...I just don't get it! I'm not thick( some would argue otherwise ???) but our breeder sent me Dexters feeding instructions over by email and it was written 250g x 3....... Now he is our first dog.....so can you guess what I did?yep, for the first 3 days he got 250g for breakfast,250g for lunch and 250 g for dinner!!750 g of food a day!!!oh my god,I die when I think about it and probably shouldn't be even admitting to this, the shame!Anyway when I took him to the vet on day 4 for his checkup,I told him that I couldn't believe after all I had read about greedy labs.....I had one who didn't finish his meals!luckily the vet probed a bit deeper and found the cause...ie Dexter was about to pop and put me right!to be fair 250 g wasn't enough.......he was skinny when we got him but 750g was just a tad too far towards the other end of the scale! ;D !!
Re: sorry....puppy food. Hi, Well Otis is on purina beta too, he has half a mug four times a day, I should know the weight but I don't. This is what the breeder told me to give him. At his vet visit yesterday the vet said he was a good healthy pup. He does try and eat stuff in the garden leaves dirt grass too ! Not sure what the next stage is for us food wize, but feel he is okay on the beta.
