Molly is being spayed next week. She is seven months and I am following the advice of my Vet. Can anyone offer any advice on aftercare. I know the advice is to keep them quiet. I just didn't think you could use the words "quiet" and "Labrador puppy" in the same sentence Does anyone have any experience of Adaptil? My daughter has used the feline version on a very nervous cat and is very impressed. Molly is not normally a nervous dog, if you exclude the puppy exuberance, she is a very steady creature. I was just wondering if it might help her over what will be a difficult few days for her Thanks for any advice
Re: Spay aftercare Meg gets stressed in the car. Always has done. Think it was because she was sick when we first bought her home. I've tried the Adaptil products including collar and spray and sorry to say it hasn't helped Meg at all. It might though with pup, cos she just needs to be calmed down and won't be stressed. I remember when Meg was spayed. She wasn't allowed to climb stairs or get over excited. She was on lead for two weeks and when I took her back for check up I said to her that's it girl no need for lead all the time now, and vet said oh yes there is for another 2 weeks to let the internal stitches heal. From what I can remember it wasn't too bad. I tried walking her at different times of day so that she didn't have too many distractions to get over excited for. Good luck.
Re: Spay aftercare Hi Tina , you will find that for the first day or two , Molly wont want to move about too much, its the day 3 and onwards that they feel so much better and expect to scamper about like they are used to doing : Jumping is one of the worst things they can do , thankfully Millie doesnt come onto the sofa so it wasnt an issue for us , likewise stairs as we live in a bungalow . Pick Molly up to put her into a car or sofa or stairs, just for the first week or two . I`ve never used Adaptil but it may be useful for Molly . The keeping quiet period is soon over though Tina , I think Millie was back off lead about two weeks post spay, hoping all goes well .
Re: Spay aftercare Hi, my Merla is nearly 11 months and was spayed 2 weeks ago, so we're right in the middle of that at the moment. The main problem has been keeping her mind occupied!! If you look at the things Julie has done with Charlie over their (much, much longer) period of reduced activity in the Lovely Chocolate Charlie thread there's some great ideas there. I do quite a bit of gundoggy stuff with Merla and she was missing her retrieves, so I got thinking about what we could do. After the first week, we started again doing some tiny 5 yard split retrieves in the back garden, and also the 'which upturned plant pot is the dummy under' game, which she loves. That was good, as I would put her in a 'stay' indoors while I set it up, which she thought was very exciting, then got her to 'heel' out to within a few yards of the plant pots before setting her off to sniff. All in all, it's been very good for training actually, as we've had to work on small scale precision rather than speed and distance. It's also been great for heelwork! We have a few garden centres which we can take dogs to, some even with tea and cakes (!) and those have made good alternative trip venues as it just seemed so mean to take her up on the Heath with all the other dogs running around and then keep her on the lead. Also things like National Trust places where you can just heel on lead round the gardens. We are now doing little bits of off-lead stuff again in suitable places, if only to remind her what a 'recall' is! I don't have any experience with Adaptil, but haven't really felt the need for it either.
Re: Spay aftercare Tatze loved hide and seek games. I also threw handfuls of kibble on the lawn for her to find (longish grass - took her ages ) ) I had kongs lined up in the freezer too. It wasn't long before she was back to normal - the only thing I restricted after a week was playing with her best friend, Zaba, as they really do hooly around together! She got lots of extra treats but she's still slim and lovely
Re: Spay aftercare I've used Adaptil spray in the car as Harley hated the car. I rarely use it now, but will if we are going to be in the car more than 30 mins. It has really helped Harley from the first time we used it
Re: Spay aftercare A vet I know let her dog off the lead after a few days! You will find that she will be full of beans in a couple of days and hopefully with only a very small wound about 1" long. When I worked at the vet, often a bitch spay was up and lively within an hour or two of the op!
Re: Spay aftercare I hope Molly will be OK with all the great advise you have been given. Were you thinking of using the Adaptil Collar? I have been thinking about getting one for Charlie to see if it will calm him down a little : Good luck Tina x
Re: Spay aftercare Good luck for the ops, Tina and Jade. Here's an encouraging picture, taken a few days ago, entitled 'I'm meant to be taking it easy but that old cat food box was just too tempting!'
Re: Spay aftercare Thanks for all the advice. So she doesn't need a special diet. Good, saves me cooking chicken and rice. Small frequent meals. So lots of Kongs. Guess it will be a few days before she's up to her usual Buster Cube etc. Keep her quiet, if only In the five months she's lived with us she has happily accepted the stair gate across the bottom of the stairs. This weekend the little devil has pushed her way through the gate and upstairs twice. I assume this will cure her Counter Cruising Campaign (well for a couple of days)
