Harley was running around in the woods today and has cut one of her paws in 3 places. She has started limping and going to the corner of the garden to lick it. I know there are things we can try, but my mind has gone blank. Advice would be appreciated x

I would bathe in boiled cooled salt water to clean it , then maybe something like sudocrem , and if possible put a sock onto her whole paw until the sudocrem has soaked in and also to keep her paw clean and dry . Hoping she is better soon, poor love x

Oh poor girl. Does it look like it needs stitches? If not, keeping it clean and dry (might need to dig out the cone....:( ) would be the thing. So difficult to manage, paw injuries.

Oh poor Harley. Hope the cuts aren't too deep and heal quickly. I think I would be tempted to use a cone if she doesn't't leave it alone.

Poor Harley, always getting cut paws here as lots of flint in our part of the country. I would do just as Kate advised, wash it a few times a day, cover with a sock and keep an eye on it. I haven't used Sudocream only on babies bums!! You can get boots to stop her licking it (I have a website if you would like it). I am not sure vets can stitch pads easily but if your worried you could phone them for advise. Paws are a nightmare :( x

Poor Harley! Casper did something similar, twisted too quickly and split his paw. I bathed in a pint of warm water with 1 tsp of natural salt, put a blob of savlon creme.. (normally I have a tube of sudecreme handy..) then I popped a sock on it. It was fine and healed really quickly. I think they can be a problem if they keep licking, or a foreign object gets embedded and works it way right into the paw.

Thank you all. Just gone and got hibiscrub and sudocreme. Going to clean it then put a sock on and bandage it up. She keeps coming up to me and giving me her paw

I'm not sure bandaging it is the right way forward Ternaya, a degree of air needs to get to it to help the healing process. If I were you I would just secure the sock at the top with the bandage. That's what I was advised to do and it always works. Hope Harley is OK xx

I agree - don't bandage, just the sock secured at the top. It needs to be kept clean and dry and to stay dry it needs air. Bandaging and moist ointments will work against keeping it dry.

I'd bathe it in the saline solution (1 teaspoon salt to 250ml of water) with Betadine added at a ratio of 1:10 (so 10 ml Betadine to 100 ml saline). The Betadine will deal with any bacteria present. Dry it then put the sock on, taping at the top above the next highest knobby bit on the leg. Change the sock daily. Definitely use a cone at any sign of licking the foot. Licking is the enemy as it will keep the wound moist.

Poor sausage. Foot injuries are a challenge. There has been a few of us who've had to deal with this in the past year or so and I'm sure we all feel for you and Harley.

Sorry Teranaya, haven't been around the last couple of days ( visitor season here!) I caught you quick on Facebook. The vet gave me antibiotic cream when Dexter skinned his pads a while back and bandaged, them ( because he won't toilet in the garden ,he has to have a little walk over the road to the park so she thought he needed something to protect) after 24 hours the wounds were wet and greasy....so I stopped the cream and bathed it in salt water and left them uncovered ( bandaged them and put a sock on for toile ting ) and there was a huge improvement in the next 24 hours.....probably took 5 days to say he was back to normal and I kept him on grass lead walks for another couple of days ....
Hope you are seeing an improvement today ,sore paws are miserable

Kongs have been a lifesaver today . This morning she was still not putting her paw down so was limping. I went and brought a boot for going outside in the garden. This afternoon she's got more energy! This is where kongs have been great - glad I made a batch 2 days ago . We have had a short 10 min walk around the block with her boot on, but had to stop 3 times as the boot started slipping off!! She isn't putting full pressure on it still, but is getting there
Going to pop to the vets tomorrow just to get it checked and ask about walks as she goes with dog walker on Tuesday. Well, we'll see.

Oh poor Harley she does look miserable. I feel for you Ternaya, pad/paw wounds are so difficult to manage but it will heal with a good regime of cleaning as you are doing. Good luck at the vets xxx

Just been to the vets. They said it is healing well but have bandaged it up as she keeps licking it when I'm not looking and I have to go to work for a few hours tomorrow. On Lead street walks only for the next 2 days for 5-10 mins a time. Got to go back to the vets on Wednesday for them to check it as one of the slices has a small bit of skin not attaching properly, but hopefully bandaging it will help.
My friend and her 11 year old son visited today and Harley had a great time playing 'find it', tuggy, ball rolling and playing with her treat game. Been looking at Julie's threads to get ideas on games/training whilst restricted. Any other suggestions welcome
