    Is this normal???

I have a 10 month old Chocolate Lab. A couple times a week he will all of a sudden go "crazy". He starts barking non stop, jumping at me, nipping at me running around like a chicken with his head cut off. It lasts for about 10 minutes and then he just stops. He will often fall asleep after.

He's always done it but he's getting bigger now. He is neutered.

Any ideas what's up or what I can do.

    Thanks

    Hi @mudpie21 ,

If you are new to the Forum, welcome. Yes I think this behaviour is normal for Labs :(, if not all then some. My black lab has had spells of doing this, although she stopped I thought at about 10 months. But then she's suddenly done it twice this week --and she's 13 months :( She has had a phantom pregnancy so I'm hoping it's due to her hormones.
I deal with it by just standing totally still, fold my arms and turn my back. She soon stops thank goodness. !0 minutes is a long time.

Hi @mudpie21. This sounds like a case of zoomies. This wonderful article might be helpful: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/dog-zoomies/
My 10-month old girl occasionally does the same. When it happens, I ask her to sit and lure her with a high value treat, if needed. In the very rare occasions when this fails to work, I just stand still until she calms down. I hope this helps.

My thought was zoomies as well...although my lab's are not that wild. He just does the bum tuck wild runs throughout the room/garden/house, but no barking or jumping or nipping. And in my case it's always caused by this (from the article @Jay linked)

"Most dogs are more likely to have the zoomies when they are already in a playful of excited state."

When it happens, it happens when he's playing with our other dog, but because he doesn't do any damage I just find it hilarious.

Oh, I love the zoomies! I often play the "ready steady" game with it. If they do it inside (which I don't normally allow, but sometimes I go soft), they'll be zooming around and one will jump on the sofa and freeze. Then I say "reeeeeeaaaaaaddddyyyyyy.........steeeaaaaaaadddddyyyyyyy......GO!", which will set them off zooming again. It's brilliant fun :)
Outside, I will chase them and just generally join in the fun!

I agree, I love the zoomies, the unbridled, crazy joy of it, the maniacal smile on the face. Plum mainly does when she meets another dog on a walk and the dog agrees to play.

Yes, a lab thing I think. Molly does it and so did our previous lab BJ. We call it 'going crackerdog' :p

Harley still does zoomies at 3 years old. She's never tried to nip or jump up at me though. She has mini zoomies in the house, but full on in the garden. Usually if she comes near me I will throw a soft toy her way and she carries that around and throws it in the air which makes her have more zoomies :)
Personally I love watching them have zoomies. Yesterday next doors dogs came in and all 3 had zoomies for a few mins :D

We have had zoomies twice today today despite a long new walk in an unknown area.

zoomies were prompted firstly by have a later than normal walk (thank you Cody for the lay in much appreciated) and then washing the mud off him

I find it very amusing and he wears himself out doing it. He picks his toys up in the process and generally just enjoys himself.

I am in the minority, I don't like zoomies in my dogs, although can smile at other dogs doing it outside. A 30kg Labrador doing roomies in the house or garden is a 'no no', could injure themselves. I said 'stop' to mine and calmed him down, if in the garden I shut him into a smaller area, fortunately it only lasted a minute. I'm a meanie :(
