I now know why dogs and sticks don't mix, I always wondered what damage a harmless stick would do...Out walking Poppy tonight who's on short walks due to swelling in her belly after her Op we hardly ventured out the house when she picked up a longish stick, I thought let her carry it for a while keep her out of trouble...she then snapped in half and appeared to swallow it she fell to the floor choking I panicked grabbed her and ran the little way home forgetting shes not supposed to run, managed to get my neighbours husband to help open her mouth and there across her throat was a piece of stick we managed to get it out phew, poor Poppy she's now resting even more and very quiet bless her, and im in shock too....
Re: STICKS Oh Lois how frightening, I really hope Poppy recovers from her ordeal and you, I bet you ran like the wind. If Poppy likes sticks buy her a KONG SAFESTIX, you can get them on Amazon. Take care x
Re: STICKS Happened to my old GSP a couple of days ago, she chewed at a log on the floor, got some wood stuck, pawed her mouth, fell over, went blue, I thought she was dying, very scary.
Re: STICKS How scary So glad that in both cases the obstruction was removed in time. What a fright though...
Re: STICKS Harley always picks up sticks and chews on them......think I will take them off her now after reading this. Glad both are ok x
Re: STICKS OMG so scary. :-\ A neighbour used to have a bull mastif (years ago) who always carried a stck. Walking through the wood it had picked up a stick and started running. The stick must have hit something went down its throat and stuck out if it's neck just below the jaw !!!!!! I've never let my dogs have sticks after being told that definitely won't now.
Re: STICKS It was very scary Poppy ok today, still trying to keep her quiet due to her swollen belly internally shes very very bored and I have to keep putting her in her crate but with lots on nibbles and chews so she knows it not a punishment...but she looks at me with her big brown eyes saying mum I just want to play.....bless her
Re: STICKS Should she have a swollen belly? I don't remember any of mine having one after a spay and have had five done over the years.
Re: STICKS No She shouldn't have a swollen belly I took her to the vets yesterday and they examined her and hopefully with lots of rest the swelling will go down, I have to keep a close eye on her and if it gets worse or it feels hot, its back to the vets so unfortunately Poppy is spending lots of cosy time in her crate with lots of goodies to keep her happy and so she knows its not because shes been naughty, because very difficult to keep her quiet.
Re: STICKS I hope it goes down really soon, very difficult for you both having to keep her so quiet, I empathise with that.
Re: STICKS Lois, I had a bit of a challenge with keeping Dexter away from his tail wound.....he didn't bother it a lot but he demonstrated a couple of times every day that he could reach it....you know, enough to scare me ....we had a few, really bad, restless nights and the vet prescribed a herbal sedative .....Calmex.It it did seem to chill him out and he rested .....he is older than Poppy though so I don't know if that would make a difference?Im not one for medicating as a solution but it was right for us during that part of the recovery.....I couldn't crate Dexter though, the crate he has was too small for him with the 31 inch cone on and the vet was going to lend me a bigger one but he could turn round in that and reach his tail as he showed them when he stayed in the night after his op.....little monkey,it's a tough Time but it will pass xxx
Re: STICKS Thanks I did ask the vet for help....but they said I would just have to cope...but will try calmex hopefully it work even just a little would be helpful so worried about her insides now..and I think the lump is a little bigger so vets on Monday I think or am being a little neurotic now????
Re: STICKS Go straight back Lois if you have any doubts, she's had a big op....Dex was castrated the same time as his first tail op and I thought the wound looked a little red and puckered on the third day.....I didn't go back to the vet ( for that ??? We did for the tail :)but I took a photo every morning after that so I could see the progress ,it actually started to improve from day 4 .....how,does she seem today?x
Re: STICKS Poppy's swelling seems to have gone down a little today thankgoodness, I have bought a plug in calmer thing seems to have worked last night and this morning she's not as mad as usual or maybe she's not feeling good feeling neurotic again, so difficult when they don't talk...still on rest for a few more days bless her.
Re: STICKS Oh they have your nerves shredded don't they..... Glad the plug in worked,I think I saw Annabelle ( Puppypal) mention them in a post yesterday...great news the swelling is subsiding,of she seems calmer ,she's eating and she isn't showing any signs of a fever ( which I guess she means she isn't hot ???dont forget Dexters my first dog...)I think she is ok,don't feel neurotic,if you aren't happy don't hesitate to get her checked x
