Hi, I wonder if anyone can suggest anything for this little issue. As you know Charlie has been tough to lead train, he is heaps better now but when David takes him out at 0630, he walks beautifully until he hears or spots any kind of bird and then starts leaping around on his lead and barking. All the usual methods are used i.e. trying to get him to sit, trying to get him to "look at me", going in different directions etc. but he loses focus on David and it's just not happening. Other than this he is doing really well. I am guessing this is the Pointer half of him!! Also he is becoming quite difficult to call in from the garden as he has started running around like a lunatic in and out of the trees yapping at the birds, so he is not listening to me, this behaviour disappeared for a while and unfortunately it has returned. I don't want to stop him running as this is apart from his lead walk and agility once a week all the exercise that he is getting due to no off lead at the moment. On the plus side we are on exercise 5 recall in the garden on day 3, and he has recalled 8 times each day turning immediately on the spot like a robot without any issues, although he is on a 10m long line! Thank you Helen
Re: stop leaping! Hi Helen , are you using really high value treats for Charlie ? I found that bits of kibble just didnt cut it with Sam but sausages cut into little bits did the trick , anything that smells good ? Well done though on the recall , thats really great
Re: stop leaping! Sorry, no very useful advice - just wanted to say well done on the recall exercises!!! Go Charlie!!! (And Helen and David, of course... )
Re: stop leaping! Katie, thanks for that will use sausages and see if that does the trick. I would use T Bone steak if I thought that would calm him down!! Thanks Karen for your support. Helen
Re: stop leaping! Other high value treats (well Lady thinks they are high value) that are really easy to rustle up at short notice is buttered toast sprinkled with Parmesan cheese will the butter is still melted than cut into small squares. She goes mad for them.
Re: stop leaping! Yeah, I was just going to ask what you give Lady once you have eaten all the buttered toast with sprinkled parmesan...
Re: stop leaping! I sometimes struggled to get Riley to listen but his squeaky ball seems to break his concentration enough to remind him I'm there and then I use the actual command I want him to respond to. Good luck
Re: stop leaping! A friend of mine swears by liver sprinkled with crushed garlic (or garlic powder) and then cooked to boot leather in the oven. It's very smelly but dry in your pocket and it does seem to get their attention. Except for Hebe (she's an odd one) her favourite is cat fish sticks, she'll do anything for a piece of one of those.
Re: stop leaping! Tried sausage today - no joy. Am trying David's toast, butter and parmesan tomorrow, also toast with peanut butter and slightly baked. Fingers crossed. Couldn't cope with liver - sorry! Thanks as always Helen x
Re: stop leaping! David, the parmesan toast and my peanut butter toast worked, Charlie couldn't get enough of them and paid attention to David this morning on his walk. Thank you so much. Helen
