Hi All, Harvey has developed a slightly odd behaviour with 'his' towel - one we leave by the back door for quickly drying him off if its raining (remember that wet stuff!). Anyhow, he now stands over it and, with his front paws, starts digging on it and passes it underneath his body. Sometimes he then lies on it, sometimes he then just ignores it. If I stop him by holding it and saying 'drop it' he then sometimes decides to hump it! What's up?
Re: Strange behaviour with towels Hello Bob hope u nd ur dog are doin gud.. Its normal behaviour don wry my puppy does it sometimes but doesnt hump he jus takes the towel puts it down and then lies on top off it otherwise jus digs it up he likes it wet may be tats d reason.. don wry
Re: Strange behaviour with towels I think my Molly is about the same age as Harvey (almost 11 months) and she still has to have a game with her towel once I've dried her.
Re: Strange behaviour with towels Scout does the same. : My two have also started a fun game (for them) whilst being dried. They've decided it's great idea to go through my legs as I dry them. They get dry I get wet. : It gave me an idea though. I haven't tried it yet because we've had no rain but I bought two microfiber mits that you can get for washing the car or dusting. Only £1 each from asda. I use a microfiber towel for the dogs so figured the mits would be the same. They have the bobbly bits on one side, towel on the other. I thought I can dry as I stroke/rub. When we get rain I'll let you know if it works. :
Re: Strange behaviour with towels My Max does the same thing minus the humping and he's 7 months, actually he does the digging in his crate sometimes to move his blanket into a position he wants it in
Re: Strange behaviour with towels Our Snowie does the same thing. And he is now 2.5 years old and it doesn't look like there is any stopping it. He doesn't dig his towel (we leave it outside on a chair, and he does love his rub down after a swim), but he does dig up his sleeping blanket, and sometimes his bed, and also the rug: he will dig them up into a ball and then flop on top of it. I opened a topic on something similar in this forum where he digs up our sofa. I am learning that this is instinctive behaviour to make a nest. The way we are working around this is to direct him to dig on his blanket and not on the rug. It has taken about a year, but he is now responding to us when we talk to him. (We say it in a the kindest tones, perhaps some people might think we're not assertive enough! But we prefer kindness...) And regarding the sofa: we removed the sofa in our bedroom and bought him a comfy bed, and he is now digging in his bed. Hopefully when we return the sofa, he will be so used to digging in his bed that he won't think of returning to the sofa. He has never humped anything other than another dog, so there I cannot comment!
