Hi everyone, I have a Black Labrador 6 years old. About 8 weeks ago she suddenly began to run her nose along edge of sofa and stairs and out of character refused to climb either. I feared that it was her eyes and so took her to the vet. Her eyes proved to be perfect and a thorough health check showed no problems. All went back to normal in couple days.
Now shes doing it again. But this time its occasionally through the day.Other times everything perfectly normal. Shes active, playful ,good appetitite, bright. The vet previously thought it possible hormones might be at play.
Anyone ever experienced anything like this with a female labby?
Incidentally, 8 weeks ago, first incidence, was a time when her season would have been due and now about 8 weeks on would be near puppy time ? Could there be a connection ?

Hello and welcome :) This could well be stress related behaviour which, given the timings , may be related to the season and puppy dates . If the Vet is happy with her and apart from this, she is happy and active , I wouldnt worry too much about her :)

Thank you for your reply. I will just monitor for now but it does like it may be related doesn't it.

    Hi there and welcome!

Not sure I'm quite understanding your point about your pup's season. Are you saying you think she might be pregnant?

Welcome from me and meg yellow lab, 14. Meg was spayed before her first season (vet suggestion) so I've never had any problems. Hope she settles.

    Hi and welcome :)
When did she have her last season? Could it be that she could be pregnant or having a phantom pregnancy?
Hope you get it all sorted soon x

Sorry for any confusion..She is 8.1/2 weeks past her season.

Today ive monitored very closely. She has been active.Rolling on lawn on her back, diving in her pool, eager to walk, eat, play..there has been a little scratching in corners and running around with soft items in her mouth..This stairs ,sofa behaviour though is off/on. Sometimes all is normal and others as if shes thinking " can I get up there,". 10 mins ago she went to base of stairs and I heard her doing a little cry and staring up the stairs.. I went infront of her and she followed though very awkwardly. She then ran her chin along her little sofa and walked away..I comforted her and she jumped on and immediately scratched the covers up.
She did some of this yesterday and later in the evening without any prompting she just ran up the stairs and vaulted onto her sofa as though all was perfectly normal.. I just don't know what to make of it.

That does seem strange ??? I would go back to the vets and get them to check her over as that doesn't seem normal. Sorry I can't be of more help. Someone might be along soon who might have some advice (hopefully)

and here we go again.. Last night paws on base of stairs crying a little looking up to top. She climbed slowly and carefully and then when almost to the top bounded up. She jumped on the bed and started playing.
Today, no problem at all and just now has been rolling and playing on the lawn.
    :)

This is just a stab in the dark probably completely wrong especially as you think it could be hormones but do you have all your windows open in this hot weather and is there a draft, doors possibly rattling upstairs etc.

I know that sounds mad but my old lab didn't like it if there was a draft through the house because doors might bang. ::). Also my cousins dog who lives across the yard behaves very strangely when all their windows are open. He doesn't want to go in the house and behaves like he is scared and looks really worried when he first goes in.

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree, ha ha ::), just a thought.

Perhaps she is in pain or having a false pregnancy? I would take her to the vet if she was mine.

She has been to the vet Stacia. I don't take any chances with her and the vet gave her a thorough exam. Everything checked out perfectly.

:)haha Love the Pun.. Windows are open Jen but shes not a jumpy dog so I don't think its that. Just odd how this has coincided with her hormones, nesting behaviour.. There is no way in the world shes pregnant as I am with her 24 hours. ..As the vet said, eyes, ears, muscles, bones, all else checked out perfectly.

    Re: Strange Behaviour

Another stab in the dark... could she be developing some intermittent lameness or joint issues? Perhaps she tried to jump onto the couch and it hurt, so now she's a bit worried about it until she gets coaxed into the jump and finds it okay .. this time. Maybe totally unrelated to her season at all? Did the vet take x-rays? Sometimes a lameness issue won't show up on an exam but will show up as subtle changes on an x-ray. Or a tiny bone chip or spur could be causing the problem when she moves in just the right (wrong) way. Good luck! Its a puzzler!

Dogs are very sensitive to " other" things in house, would she be sensing something up d stairs or on her bed,ya may think it far fetched but i just wonder :-\
