Hi all, I am a new lab owner. We have a charcoal lab who is 8 months old. I often take her Outside to play and love the way the sun hits her coat and gives it that gorgeous shine. Is there a supplement that can be given to support that? I feed her Hills science diet large breed puppy feed. I don’t want to over do it, but was curious if anyone here supplements their dog for the same reasons I’m interested in. Thanks!
I give Tatze one cod liver oil capsule a day. She’s lovely and shiny. Welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Keir from Manchester UK Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German. Keir is my fifth Guide Dog puppy, a yellow Golden Retriever/Flatcoat cross and he's eight months old.
Coco's coat is not as sleek as a Lab, but I give him a couple of omega 3 fish oil capsules every day, and he also gets a little salmon oil most days - it really keeps his coat tip-top and shiny.
I give my big yellow boy a few squirts of salmon oil each meal. It was recommended to me because he occasionally gets hotspots on his neck, and it has certainly cleared those up; and one side-effect is that his coat is fabulously thick, soft and gorgeous. Welcome to the forum!
Another salmon oil user here. It's good for my black girl in particular, as she can get dry skin. Minimal brushing is also another tip. I brush mine very rarely, just when they're moulting badly. It's made a big difference to Willow's coat condition.
Yes fish oil is great. Started it for our older lab who was getting itchy. And use it for the young ones now. Was told the fish oil would help her constipation too but not sure that worked. One rarely needs brushing and has a nice shiny coat. The other sheds a lot and when his coat looks a little dull it reminds me to brush him and get the dull hair out. Aren't puppies fun?
I use salmon oil not for coat condition but for the benefits for joints but Jen does have a lovely coat. I rarely brush nowadays, usually just when moulting to remove the loose fur. I've also goubd that our fortnightly hydrotherapy also keeps her coat soft and shiny.
Snowie is prone to itchiness, and I used to give him 3 salmon oil capsules each day to reduce his itchiness. But I’ve subsequently stopped feeding all fish products and his itching reduced - it was on a recommendation that he might be allergic to fish. He might be, I don’t know for certain. He’s still itchy, but not as much. Anyway, he gets butter now for extra fat, and he loves it. Butter is our magic word, he loves it so much. I think any animal fat that is high in omega 3s is good for dogs. He has a lovely thick coat, although on a white coat you can’t really see if it’s shiny like a black or chocolate coat.
