Pongo (aka kitchen hoover) got hold of a spare rib bone yesterday and wolfed it. He's gagging a bit this morning - especially when he runs - and it sounds like something's stuck. Also very soft stools...

I'm sure someone mentioned feeding a dog bread if you suspect something is stuck in the digestion.... is that right? If so, how much and how (all at once, little by little....)?

We usually give Odin sauerkraut when he swallowed something we fear could get stuck. It wraps around the objekt making it easier for the dog to get rid of it. But i don't think this will help if something is already stuck! If hes gagging constantly id go and see a vet to be honest. A blockage is nothing to mess with.

Rosie if he's gagging take him to the vet just to be safe, you know I always counsel the vet but in this case I wouldn't delay

I minded a German Shepherd once and the stupid boyfriend I was with gave him get a rib bone.he was drooling and coughing and pawing at his mouth...I rang the emergency vet number and the vet said look in his mouth...the bone was lodged across the roof of his mouth...seriously! I just flicked it out with my finger and crisis was averted...I finished with the boyfriend shortly after ;) ;D

If he is gagging I would take him to the vet at once. My daughter's husband gave her dog a lamb bone and I am afraid it got stuck.

When Benson ate some bones and started gagging, we phoned the vet after giving wet food mixed with wholemeal bread, the vet said that was the right thing to do. :) :)

Benson says Pongo old man, best have it checked out....they give you biscuits at the vet and LOTS of fussing!.... :)

That sounds worrying. Hope you've got better news by now.

How is Pongo? Did you go to the vet or did he stop gagging?
    Harley sends big licks :p

Well, no sign of "gagging" for hours and hours. Then a bit of a cough on exercise..... I think I've mis-judged this, I'm pretty sure we've got a touch of kennel cough back! :( (Not impossible, he has been with other dogs a lot over the weekend.)

Ah well. His last bout wasn't too serious, so hopefully this one will pass with no more than a sniffle.... Poor boy!

Well... just been for a no-holds-barred walk in the woods with another labrador and her human, Pongo hoolying madly around for an hour and a half, big swims in lovely big pond and he is now completely and utterly exhausted..... and not a bit of a cough or gag or anything. Minor kennel cough? Small obstruction now cleared? Who knows. Anyway, he seems fine now (if comatose) so whatever it was, it looks like it has gone!

Perhaps just another case of over-anxious mother...

    :)

Pongo says thanks for all the kind wishes! (Although he's wondering what I made all the fuss about.) :-[
