Now the next thing..... The tip of Dexters tail was bloody 2 days ago....I put it down to him rooting around in the bougainvillia bushes....hidden thorns.I bathed it and couldn't see where the scratch/injury was so didn't think any more of it.I've got in tonight ( holiday weekend here this weekend so Husband and pals drinking beer in the garden to celebrate the extra day off tomorrow)and his tail is bloody again, dried blood so it happened earlier this evening and obviously not getting much in the way of suggestions from the alleged 'responsible ' adults present.... Anyway I wouldn't be concerned but when we went on his bedtime walk he isn't holding it straight out horizontal ,it's curling up at the end.I still can't see anything when I bathed it,it doesn't bother him when I touch it and he's not licking it.....should I be concerned?ive looked tail tip injuries up before I came running here ...... and it really Only seems to be a break that would be considered serious?fleas and ticks are mentioned, he is 2 days overdue on his Frontline application because he is going to his first professional groom tomorrow so was going to do him after that.i go over every inch of him though everyday when he's having a cuddle and I can't see any little critters. Anyone had similar, any advice appreciated, thankyou x Fell over him tonight in a scuffle to get to the ball first that has plopped in the pool and know I have sprained/maybe broken my toe! That has no bearing on the bleeding!i would have noticed. We looked a right pair of raggle taggles out on our walk, him with his curly tail and me limping along behind him! Hope everyone's day was good nnite
Re: Tail tip bleeding Oh dearie me , could he have got his tail caught in a door ? Hope its better soon and your toe as well , what a pair indeed
Re: Tail tip bleeding My Lab's tail often bleeds because he wags it so much and it hits the wall etc. He now has a small area without any hair on. On the whole he is OK, so try not to worry . I never Frontline my dogs, don't like the idea of unnecessary chemicals being in their bodies. In nearly thirty years of dog owning I have only seen one flea on a dog! Have never seen a flea or any sign of a flea on my present dogs, aged 13 down to 16 months. Stacia
Re: Tail tip bleeding It's unlikely that it got caught in a door Kate more likely of him to wag it off! It was more because he was carrying it differently.....I'm up in 15 minutes to walk him so will conduct a thorough tail check and really hope it's like it never happened.!This dog of mine,he makes me experience levels of protectiveness I never thought existed! Stacia, your Frontline view is something I haven't considered......I just want him protected from little critters....he has a couple of scratches each day anyway round his collar area which I always check out ,if I didn't think he was protected I think I would have OCD checking him all the time,as it is he gets one good thorough going over each day and all the little checks he has when he's just being handled...it's sand mites that are the biggest bother here, they get between their toes and can go on their muzzle......little orange blighters and we have had a visit from them!how do you deter fleas.......you obviously have great success? Bye for now Angela
Re: Tail tip bleeding Tail inspection update: Could see a bit better this morning,it's got a hard scab on the end the size of a little fingernail.....I have just left it alone as it is dry,he's still curling it up at the end rather than bolt out straight when he is investigating something but showing no pain otherwise.will watch him today when he is wagging that he doesn't wack anything hard....it weathered the good morning thrashing in his crate this morning! All have a great day and hope doggies and owners stay well and happy x
Re: Tail tip bleeding Good to hear that it's no bleeding any more. I hope he is able to keep it that way If he doesn't it might be worth trying a bandage attached with some sticky medical tape. Although that sort of thing can be very inviting and is just asking to be chewed off.....
Re: Tail tip bleeding Absolutely the best thing to be developed in years for these tail injuries is a product called "dog ends". I have tried bandaging, covering over with syringe casing, sticking pipe insulation over, etc etc and nothing stays on apart from these. Tail tip injuries being incredibly common in our happy, waggy labradors!
Re: Tail tip bleeding Cool invention!!! I found the Dog Ends by googling 'dog end tail'. I will mentally file those away for future reference.
Re: Tail tip bleeding I do absolutely nothing to deter fleas ;D They just don't come my way! I don't like the sound of the sand flies though, can the dogs be bitten by them and have a disease? Stacia
Re: Tail tip bleeding Thanks for the tip re the dog ends will get some ordered as I can see it being a recurrent... The sand mites don't carry disease they are just tricky little buggers that get right in the skin between their toes, only had one visit from them so far.... x
