I have a two year old Labrador that 'talks' at me when she wants attention. By talking I mean a throat noise rather than growl or bark.
My mum's four month old labrador puppy has started to do this too. Unfortunately she has started making the noise when watching the other dogs at gun dog training. Is there anything that you can suggest to stop this behaviour as I understand this is not 'acceptable' and mum really wants to train her pup as a gun dog.

Hi and welcome to the forum. :D
Do you mean in group training classes or when your mum is training her other dogs? Four months is still a bit too young to have the attention span and self control to sit quietly and watch other dogs running around retrieving. :)

The others were training their dogs and Martha was with mum on side watching. She was sitting and quiet for a few mins and then started to 'talk'. She does it at home too.

Noise can be a sign of frustration. That's why I wouldn't have a pup as young as your mum's sitting and watching older dogs in training. When she does it at home it is important not to reward it in any shape or form. :)
