I can't believe it. Tarka appeared at 5.30 today asking for her tea but was 100% lame on her left hind. I've not seen her do anything but the garden door has been open all day and she must have done something outside. Her knee is really painful, too sore to examine properly so she's had some painkillers tonight and is going into work tomorrow for a proper look. I'm just desperately hoping she hasn't torn her cruciate.

We were due to go shooting on Friday - a day with the rest of our training group as a warm-up for the season. Some of you may recall she damaged a shoulder tendon last season and was off for three months. At the moment it looks like the season is over for her again before it starts. I can't begin to tell you how upset I am for her. Fingers crossed she has just twisted her knee and will settle quickly but it's not looking hopeful.

I am sorry, what a wretched thing to happen for Tarka and for you as you were going for a shooting training day on Friday, so disappointing. I hope it is a transient lameness and not a torn cruciate.

Oh no! Hopefully she's just being a wimp and gets better with a bit of rest for a couple of days! Though 100% lame doesn't sound good :(

4 hours after pain relief and she still can't weight bear on that leg. Worry, worry, worry.....she's a very stoic dog. If it were Lochan I'd think she was just being a wimp, but Tarka is different....worry, worry, worry....

    Re: Tarka's lame again

Well this morning she is still very lame but I reckon it's not her cruciate.

We can now localise that she has a very painful area on the front of her tibia just below her patella and I think she has gone racing out of the house yesterday afternoon after a squirrel or something similar and has belted her leg on a low wall she usually leaps over in a squirrel removal exercise. Whilst the tibia itself might be cracked it is not full thickness and is not unstable hence it would not be surgical, and I don't think it is bad enough to have involved the joint. I think she has a huge and very painful bleed between the bone and its covering, the periosteum. Xrays and MRI will confirm, but she is OK enough not to have to rush her in this morning and fit her in an already busy day.

She is fairly cheerful this morning, indulging in some post-breakfast sock snaffling. She has yet to realise she is on strict rest and her cheerfulness is going to evaporate fairly soon when Lochie and I go out without her. Hopefully she will be OK with just a few weeks off not the whole season.

Thanks for all your concern. Vets are just as soft about our animals as anyone else (if not worse), and knowing forum folk are rooting for her helps.

That's good news! Well, I know her being injured at all is awful, but good news it's not looking as bad as you feared.

Fingers crossed that it heals up, and she gets some shooting in this year.
