Me again : I was just wondering do puppies have days when there teeth are really giving them grief? Dexter hasn't really been interested in all of his toys today (his tennis ball, frisbee) but he's loved chewing his Wubba and teddy. He's also been pretty calm but nipping quite a bit at my hands when I tickle his stomach He's loved the ice cubes I've given him and his frozen Kongs. So was just wondering is this normal? Normally he's made up in the garden but he's stayed pretty close to me...
Re: Teething Yes they do have their off days, days when it blinkin well hurts and hurts more than other days too . You do right to offer frozen kongs and ice cubes , very soothing on sore gums , soon be over
Re: Teething Hi, Ive been thinking the same thing. I have managed to find some great chews that seem to last Otis ages, made by waggles and co, called paddywack and I bought them in sainsburys. I haven't given him ice cubes yet but will, was thinking of using stock but wonder if its to high in salt for him ? Maybe water is just as good. Otis nips me painfuly sometimes, Im sure its when his teeth are playing up, all he seems to want to do at the moment is chew. Maggiex
Re: Teething Our Dexter was older when we got him so we were past a lot of the teething but you will see blood on his toys sometimes and he cut a couple of the larger ones when he was here and they looked really raw when they came through.....we didn't find any teeth around the house which you might do too!poor little puppy ,hope you don't get too nipped either x
Re: Teething Oo really Maggie? I might buy some of those. The ice cubes are working, may be hoping for too much here but Dexter hasn't given stones a second glance today. Maybe wishful thinking? : Yeah, most probably! I thought the same about the stock and the salt content, I know oxo do reduced salt in beef flavour, not sure about chicken. I'm becoming a master is freezing Kongs. They're a god send! Dexter I noticed a few days ago wasn't biting as hard, given the chance and Pippa's article about bite inhibition spring to mind. Today has been quite rough, a few scratches to show of when my fiancé gets home! Ha ha
Re: Teething I'm a bit wary of using commercial stock for frozen kong filling (not that I know it's not ok, but from the read of the typical ingredient list...). I find things like the water that tinned sardines come in works well (can even dilute it a bit more) and have found all sorts of things will dissolve and flavour water if left in the fridge for a while (the hard sea biscuits I use for training for example, go mushy enough to flavour enough water for a frozen kong). (I've got to get a life here....spend far too long freezing kongs...)
Re: Teething Im just wondering though, if Im giving Otis chews, and reducing his food accordingly is that, will he still get enough nutrition ?? As do the chews have enough good stuff as his food. Actualy I feel terribly guilty tonight, I forgot to give him water today apart from mixed with his kibble, I feel so guilty, I just forgot to put it down, Igave him two bowlfuls about an hour ago, I feel so awful, poor Otis, luckily it wasn't a hot day, I wont do it again !

As do the chews have enough good stuff as his food. [/quote] Maggie - I have been truly horrified by what I've read in terms of the energy and nutritional labels on commercial puppy chews and have been as annoyed to find it difficult to find the information, with small print under stuck down labels and having to go on websites to get the information I need. I am sure they vary hugely though - so completely depends on what you buy. Whether natural stuff is better, I don't know. I think the worst was pedigree jumbones - I would have fed Charlie half his energy, but not much of his nutritional, requirements, in one tiny chew bone which would have lasted less time than a bowl of kibble.
Re: Teething Ahh thanks for that, I will go easy on the chews then and stick to ice cubes and kibble stuffed kongs. x
Re: Teething Don't feel guilty! I realised at half 5 that I hadn't fed Dexter his lunch, which is at 1pm!! I felt awful! :-[ Ive been pretty tired today and somehow it slipped my mind! Plenty of hugs and stomach rubs though and I think I'm forgiven ;D
