I rescued this lab puppy 2 weeks ago and i got him shots and exam..i know nothing about his past if he was abused or just shown no attention at all..he gets very aggressive sometimes and he chases his tail and is very clumsy and will not come when you call him and he was not potty trained at all..the vet seems to think there is a neurological problem but i dont think he has most symptoms..any help as to why he bites at the air and moves his paw like crazy and makes a horrible groan/whine? it only last 3-5 minutes..the vet is treating him with antibiotics, inflammatory and anxiety..

Hi there, welcome to the forum.
I guess you are going to have to start from scratch with everything.
I know rescue dogs can be a challenge from others on the forum.
Home you stick with him, and there isn't anything serious underlying his behaviour.

    You are very, very welcome!

Well, I'd say the tail chasing and being a bit clumsy might be normal in a 5 month old pup. Toilet training and recall sounds like it needs to start - but you're not massively behind with that, I'd say, you should be able to make up the ground.

When you say he gets aggressive, do you think it really is aggression or just puppy biting and excitement? There are loads of articles on the main site to help with this - let us know if you want us to point any out.

Did the vet say why he thought your pup had a neurological problem? Just from the description of the air biting, pawing and whining? Or are there other physical signs?

he really does no focus and then when you tell him "no" he bites himself..he had a seizure at the vets today but i think that damn shinny slippery table did it..lol...he is more worried about eating everything (grass, bugs, gravel etc) in stead of his food....he didnt know how to drink water either we had to teach him..his eyes wont look at you they look to the ground and he wont do steps..there is so many things that are not right.i had a trainer here for 2 hours and she tried using a clicker...the yellow (duke) is good with him, he puts him in his place when he bites him..thanks for the help!!

    Hi and welcome :)
I'm glad your older dog is teaching him. Hopefully the vets will get him sorted and you can begin his training.
The biting could be excitement? Good luck :)

Hi welcome from me and meg, yellow lab 14. Hope the vet can get to the bottom of it. Could it be to do with his previous life? You say he's a rescue.
Maybe he didn't have a good start in life, poor little soul. I bet he's just glad he's got you now.

Oh goodness, that sounds like a poor mixed up little puppy! Maybe just continue to try to be as patient with him as possible, and show him that it is possible to have a normal, kind owner… It must be very distressing for you not knowing what has happened in his past and why he is acting the way he is. Lucky that your older dog is good with him too. Fingers crossed for you, and of course there is hope. Hang in there, hopefully he will settle down. Two weeks is not a long time to learn that the world can be a kinder place than he had before.

    Hi there,
It's really hard to try to answer your questions about your pup from a distance. I would say to just continue to seek the advice of a vet, and look around the articles here on the site on typical puppy behaviour when it comes to biting, etc. I hope you get some clearer answers, maybe go to the vets with some questions written down so you don't forget anything and take notes on what he says.

Dr. Google can be a scary doctor, I would avoid going there too much, as you can get yourself all worked up about something that may not be the case at all.

Please keep us posted, and good luck with your pup!

I just want to say hi and welcome to the Forum.....I could cry for your little dog when you say he won't look at you...there's no knowing what has happened to him.....makes me sad.But then makes me happy,to,read he is now living with such kind ,conscientious owners who are doing their best by him.i think proceeding with all the tests and examinations with the vet is an excellent course of action, you will, have a clearer picture of him physically. some of his issues may disappear as he relaxes and becomes part of your family.5 months is still very young......it's a nutty ,busy, chaotic stage for the best of them!
Please keep in touch with us and let you us know how you are doing, hang in there and the best of luck, you have done a wonderful things taking him into your home x

    Hi!

I had no idea what I was in for until we got our puppy. Chasing and eating everything seems about right. I dont have much experience with the neurological problems, but if you stay consistent I'm sure you can make some good progress.

Sometimes Titan would get bitey and growl alot, but it was always due to being too tired or having too much energy.

Just stay consistent with what you're trying to train and you will be just fine. Good luck!
