took the naughty naughty jasper for our morning walk,
local dog meeting point,.......happily playing with 8 yes 8 dogs all off lead,....running around enjoying them self :)

suddenly jasper legs it to the other side of the field a good 100 m away,.......,.blew the whistle to call him back, he went completely death, WHY OH WHY does he think the grass is greener on the other side ????? :'( just to go and say hello to a dog that was on lead.

i honestly believed he was very well behaved teenager, :-[

sat at home with a coffee making excuses to my self, talking out loud, maybe he is missing his daddy :-[

back to the long lead on our next walk :'(

Oh dear Lynne ::) Take heart that this is not uncommon at all , I`ve had those moments too, it just goes to serve that training has to be an ongoing thing that needs reinforcing every so often, even with the best behaved of dogs, dont worry over it Lynne , tomorrow is another day :)

kate when i blow the whistle to call him to me, he as started to have a good look round first to see if there is another dog around , i am now starting to think that he associates the whistle with hey there must be

no one else as a whistle, , they just say come on, hey presto they are at there side :-[

Lynne, try not to worry too much this will happen from time to time as Kate said, just put it down to a bad day, I am sure Jasper will be just fine tomorrow and try to take an extra special jackpot treat just in case he does it again for when he comes back to you, and stay calm, says the one that panicked last weekend and got it totally wrong ::). I know how you feel only too well when your dog legs it, it's extremely scary, now you know how I feel . Wow 100 mtrs is Charlie at heel ;D If you don't laugh you will cry ;) Helen xx

Just a thought Lynne, but when you blow your whistle and he ignores you, do as Pippa says in Total Recall, run around, clapping, whooping whatever to get his attention back on you and if he comes back give him a big special reward. Do you have any doggie friends that would let you practise calling him away from their dogs? Please don't cry Lynne Jasper is a very well behaved dog but he is at that tender age of being a teenager . Keep going and look on the bright side there is only 1 thing you need to work on. Helen xx

    I definitely recognise that too.
Its the "hmmm....mum's doing the sit - what is there that she thinks I might be more interested in?" look.
    Yup, know that one well.
Don't get upset, it gets better, just keep on in with the repetitions and proofing.

just took him on a quiet field on his long training line,.......was a lovely gent on with 2 dogs so i asked him did he mind if i let him off the lead,
off he went following the guy :)
i took a deep breath, walked away not that jasper noticed,......blew the whistle and YES he came back to me, i was clapping and waving saying good boy good boy :)the gent left the field so we continued to do a bit of training,.....left the lead trailing the floor, and he never went further than me being able to stand on the lead, :)
do you think i should stick to this for a week or 2 ?

    jack pot treats sardines

think the gent will avoid me in future,........ :)

Brilliant Lynne, I would use every dog opportunity available to crack it, dog people won't mind you asking for their help at all. Well done Jasper hope you enjoyed the Sardines. Helen x

Maybe 8 dogs all off the lead running and playing around was too much? It was bound to hype him up to the eye balls and it is very difficult to get through to them once the red mist has come down. I would only let him play with one dog at a time off lead, and a calm older dog if at all possible, not another hot head youngster. :D

i have found a nice couple who have 2 dogs, very well behaved, i was on the field with them all playing very good together , when a dog walker who as 5 dogs came on and let them all off lead,......in future if there are so many i will go some where else, :)
i have lots of walks to choose from :)

thank you, i never thought of it like that, :)

Lynne , I used to take Sam to a local field when he was younger , mainly for socialisation, but it was mayhem , sometimes up to 16 dogs , half of them youngsters and I began to have trouble getting Sam to heel when time to go home . I dropped my visits right down and now its just the occasional treat, he is much more obedient now but I did realise it wasnt doing him any good to be playing " wild " games when he was younger :)

yes i am understanding it now kate, :)
got a lovely field right at my back gate, not many use it either :)
i did think the dog walker was mad letting 5 dogs off lead when there was already 3 off the lead,
i will put that walk down to experience ;)

i will stick with my training, as he was doing really well, i guess one bad days not bad :)

he is missing mark, the little bugger just sent me a photo, just got married , not surprised i am stressed :)
    yes he was joking ;)

Oh gosh Lynne what a day, sorry you had a cry.... :( I've had 2 really bad dashes from Dexter the last 2 desert walks, this week, deaf, deaf, deaf :'( dogs are suddenly coming out of the woodwork! ;D what used to be a predictable walk is becoming fraught with excitable opportunities  on Thursday I saw the signs and thought I would try a recall that would challenge him ..... Fail :(........today I tried earlier when I saw the signs and still a fail :(...... From analyzing my fails I conclude that Dexter will recall from dogs he KNOWs at a reasonably SHORT distance,I am not more interesting and rewarding than a new dog a way ahead of us :*
This is an area of total recall I have really struggled with,I think you have too, finding people to practice with....the friends I have made have let me as much as I want but it's getting a good amount of practice in with strangers that I find tricky......
I'd been starting to go out 30-60 mins later because the weather has cooled but I will try and gauge the time against the dog traffic ;D and see if I can build up from less distracting to more distracting.....I've never used a long line....need to read up in it.what happens whe. They run out to the end of it ??? Do you stand on it? X

Re: the grass is greener on the other side

just took him on the field at the back of my house,.....many distractions tonight, a group of teenagers with a ball and one dog that i spotted before he did :)
i bough the line a while ago when jasper was on short lead walks didn't use it as it should have been used. i used it as an extended lead :)
i think the line is 30 m, jasper dont go further than that away from me, unless he spots another dog,.....i had the line trailing and when he spotted the dog i just stood on it, brought the line in to me and told him to sit, bless he never even attempted to go over he just sat looking over to it :)

2 of the boys came over to fuss over him :) they was curious to know why i had a long lead, :)
so i let the lead down and threw his dummy off he went and straight back to me with it :)
then i did some sit/waits, blew my whistle for him to come, .....yippee he was a little star :)
the boys was very impressed, one even saying i want a dog like that :)
so in all the day ended well :)
i think a training line would be ideal for you

oh i am to close to mark for him to run off to get married, he is my baby :)
