Well for the last 5 days or so when I've been out walking Penny I've noticed a lot of dog poo lying around on the pavement. This isn't new, there's a fresh pile at least once a day. Sometimes it's tucked into the side of the pavement under someone's hedge and sometimes it slap bang in the middle ready for someone to stand in. The last week there has been at least one patch of diarrhoea along the road I live on and the one next to it which one of the routes we take to go to the park. I totally understand that doggie diarrhoea can be difficult to clean up but no attempt at all has been made to pick this up. It's really horrible, pale brown and slightly looser than cow pat. The final straw was today when I came in from giving Penny her morning walk... And there's a lovely fresh patch of this diarrhoea right outside my front gate!!! I just don't understand what is wrong with people. It's one thing to allow your dog to mess on the pavement and not pick it up but another thing entirely to let them do it outside the entrance to someone's house!! Don't even get me started on the fact that this poor dog has obviously had diarrhoea for at least a week and nothing seems to be getting done about it! I dread to think if it's because it's got something contagious!!! I have contacted my local council before about the street fouling and was basically told that unless I can tell them who's doing it, they can't do anything. They've supposedly put up posters but all I've seen is one new sticker on a lamp post about 7 feet off the ground where no one can see it!!! GRRRRRR!
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. I had a massive row with someone who let their dog deposit right outside someone's house round our way. Mostly on the streets things are pretty good, up the lane it can get a bit messy even though there's a bin.... Much sympathy :-\
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. I've just had to go out and rinse down the pavement in front of my house to slosh away the mess as I can totally see myself standing in it plus if it is because the dogs got an illness I don't want my dog getting it!!!
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. On my walk on the common, there are some posts - just posts in the ground, sometimes there are information notices on them. Anyway, for the last week there has been a neatly wrapped dog poo left by one of these posts each day. A new poo bag or two gets added everyday. Yesterday, all these sacks had been picked up an neatly put into one. I can't understand it. Who is picking up their dog poo, neatly tying it up, but leaving it by a post? Why?
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. When I worked at the first kennels I was at there was a route we would walk the dogs that was popular with owners too. There is a tree by the entrance to the field that people used to hang bags of poo on! So stupid as all they had to do was cross the road where there was a poo bin in the car park of the dogs home!
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. Total sympathy with this problem. About 5 years ago someone in our village let their large dog poo right outside my gate just in time for my children, then at Primary School to walk out and nearly stepped in it. I was furious that I had to clear it up so I typed a rather large note and attached it to my gate stating in no uncertain terms what I would do if I caught the owner allowing this behaviour ever again. It NEVER happened again. This behaviour is not exclusive to city living, here where I live in a lovely village owners are equally as disgusting not clearing up even outside the local School, in the children's playground, infact anywhere they like There are poo bins and signs in the park and I have actually seen a poo bag dropped next to the poo bin I have handed owners poo bags when they were about to walk off and not clean up, I am not kidding they looked at me like I had fallen from the sky but I wouldn't let them off explaining that children play in the park and it's a serious health risk. This is one thing that makes my blood boil. My own children always carry poo bags and clean up after our dogs, they have total respect and know that's what correct dog ownership is about as for the adults. Why are some people so revolting.
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. Sympathy here too . My area is very rural , close to beaches and moorland walks , most days I come accross poo bags just left ,occasionally even tied to branches of trees like some sort of disgusting baubles , its not rocket science to take it home surely

Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. I only thing I can think of for "bag and leave" is that social pressure (maybe they are observed) leads to people picking up the poo, but as soon as they judge "safe", ie out of sight, they throw it away.
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. The local council can do something about if you make enough noise! Recently the road up to my daughters primary school was littered with dog mess across the footpath. We had to zigzag in and out of it everyday. Fortunately our local councillor has children at the school too so I drew his attention to it. He reported it to the dog fouling dept who came and cleared it all up the next day. However no sooner was it cleared up, more appeared. So I complained again! They ended up calling at houses in the road and watching to see when it was happening. It turned out to be a dog who lived in the road who kept getting out of the garden. If the mess is on route to a primary school it would be worth a complaint to your local council stating the dangers to children. Chloe
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. I don't get the 'hanging it in a tree' thing. Why why why? Do they intend to come back for it but forget? Kate, I did have to laugh at your 'disgusting baubles' comment though. That's exactly what it's like. The Christmas tree of your worst nightmares... Horrible.
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. My previous complaint to the council resulted in the street cleaner coming round and apparently the dog warden put up posters, but as I said before all I saw was one new sticker on a lamp post. The council also said if I let them know if it happened again they would send the street cleaner round again, but I feel this defeats the point - people will still continue to allow their dogs to mess because somebody else will clean it up. I was also told that if I witnessed someone not picking up after their dog and reported it to the dog wardens then they would go and visit the person. I know this does happen but I have better things to do with my time than sit in front of my window and watch people that walk last, like go to work!! I hesitate to complain too much, especially about the dog wardens as I know them personally from working alongside them in the dogs home, and I know they do a good job and are very busy. There are a lot of people who take their children to school along the road and I've heard more than one exclamation when someone has stepped in dog mess or rolled their pushchair through it.
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. Aha! I just knew someone would have been able to get a research grant to study (official term) "bag it and flingers". ;D ;D ;D Here it is: http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/file/209089 Yup, "such walkers are conforming to the subjective norms....once out of sight, their own attitudes and beliefs...prevail". The answer, because we can leverage the desire of "bag it and flingers" to be part of the in-group, is to put up a notice saying "I know who you are! I have seen you flinging your dog poo! Don't do it, it's horrible and not what nice people do". Right, off to print my posters, ready to nail to the posts tonight.
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. In Devon it says "if your dog has a poo, pick up a stick and flick it" this of course is in the country side. I walk my dogs in a 'nature reserve' and we religiously pick up the dog poo. There was a major 4 day dog show on last weekend and some of the show people walked there dogs there and just left masses of poo, they, of all people should know better! There is a bin right by the gate and rows of bins the other side of the road where the dog show was. Who will get the blame for all this mess, us local dog walkers of course and maybe even banned from walking our dogs. Makes me mad!
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. We take most of our walks in a field that has a public footpath in it (heel practice on the 5 minutes to and from and then off-lead in the field). Harv seems to think that it is a requirement to relieve himself as soon as we arrive so I usually end up carrying a bag (or two!) or poo during our walks! What amazes me is the number of other dog walkers that I've seen carrying poo bags in the time that we have been doing this walk (around 2 months now - not continuously you understand!). Who'd like to take a guess?
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. It is awful not to bag and bin your poo, raw feeding has almost stopped Otis eating his own poo, but when we are at the park its a different matter, there are plenty of poo bins, but people still dont pick up, and Otis feels its his duty to eat the poo, totaly disgusting, its such a simple thing to do and benefits everyone, some people ! x
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. Our garden gate backs onto a bridleway which leads out across the fields to the Downs Link, perfect for walking the dog/cycling etc. But not when people let their dogs foul right in the gateway. I`m thinking of putting up signs and a remote operated CCTV!!
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners.
Uncle Bob - nil
Exactly right. How ridiculous is that? Of course, there is dog mess everywhere around the field and the odd full poo bag that has been abandoned. I did over-hear one walker being reprimanded for doing half a job (possibly by the farmer/landowner, possibly just somebody who cares) and the excuse was ... 'I haven't finished my walk yet - I was going to pick the bag up again later.' Yes, of course you were. : Silly thing is that there is a designated bin for poo bags at the end of the drive that gives access to the field so everybody has to walk right by it!
Re: The inconsiderateness of other owners. I too get really annoyed when people don't pick it up. the field I occasionally take Harley to is a football pitch for local football teams for children on a weekend. Before they even start yo set up the kids line up armed with poo bags and walk across the field to pick up all the dogs mess. To me, they shouldn't have to do this!! In the woods some people also leave them as 'baubles' on trees. There are dog bins everywhere I once followed a gentleman in his mid fifties (at a guess) and handed him his 'bauble' back. The look on his face was priceless ;D
