Cooper (2-1/2 years old) threw up his undigested dinner (kibble) this morning. He didn't finish eating his dinner last night and, when sleeping,I could hear his tummy rumbling and thought "oh, no.....not a good sign". But nothing happened overnight. When I got up this morning at 6:45 he seemed in a hurry to go outside and I thought he had to poo or pee BUT, no, he threw up twice on the deck and it was kibble in it's original form. First, I was shocked and concerned but then I was also thankful that it was OUTSIDE! and not all over carpeting or hardwood floors!! Has this happened to any of you? What concerned me most was that it had not been digested and how on earth he could hold it all night long, is beyond me. The poor chap. I had to make sure he did not re-eat it (ugghh) but he did ask for breakfast about an hour later and he is his old wonderful self now. Thanks for any info.
Sometimes if they eat their food too quickly, they need to have a "second go", so will regurgitate it and eat it again. It's perfectly normal. Although more common with bones etc, if they've not chewed it enough, my two have, on occasion, done it with kibble too. I just let them get on and eat it again. If it's real vomit, rather than regurgitation, they don't eat it. Cooper was probably a bit put out that you didn't let him finish his dinner!
Yes, it's normal and not a problem. Wild dogs would feed their pups this way, to prepare the food for puppy tums. This is why they happily re-eat it.
I understand the re-eating thing but it was in his stomach all night long and then he threw it up....undigested. Having it in his stomach whole all night long just doesnt seem right.
Hinyiur other replies are totally correct, they do chuck up if they haven't digested properly and are very enthusiastic to help with the clean up operation! But I hear what you are saying Yvonne ,I had the same probably 6 months back ...Dexter got me up in the night, unheard of ,and threw up undigested kibble after it had been in his system for 8/9 hours.....I gave him the tiniest portion of sloppy rice in the morning and that came back up to so I went to the vet....I was frightened in case there was something blocked so I did have the expense of X Ray's but it gave me peace of mind...it was just a bug! I guess you are thinking the same as I was ? Has he snacked anything suspect in the last 24 hours before being poorly ? I'm an example of it not being anything to worry about ....but if you are in any doubt I'd get him checked out,......
I was thinking he could have eaten something he should not have BUT after he threw up and slept for about an hour he then wanted his breakfast!!! God bless labrador stomachs!!!! He just loves to chew on branches of wisteria, spiders, ants, you name it....but there is nothing out in his fenced off area that he could eat (except his poo which, thank goodness,he does not do). If he throws up his breakfast then I will definitely take him to the vet. I just couldnt believe he could hold it in all night long.....I just feel terrible for him. But I see that Dexter kept it for 8 to 9 hours so it's about the same. He is pooing and peeing normally ..... but he was very restless last night going from the bedroom to the hallway and back to the bedroom....and even there moving around so he probably also had tummy pains. Thanks for your responses....much appreciated.
Poor boy. I'm glad he seems to be better now. Harley has done that a few times hours and hours after eating and has been fine afterwards.
Belle used to do that sometimes. It'd always worry me as to why it was undigested (over night usually), but she was always right as rain & ready to eat. Strange creatures.
Update Sunday: he would not eat his regular dinner last night so boiled some rice and chicken and fed that to him around 6PM. Half an hour later he threw it up! Luckily, out on the deck! So he and I went to bed and neither of us had dinner! This morning early 4AM he woke me up (most unusual at that time) and he went out and had a very long pee but no poo. Then he came in and threw up bile(which he had done a long time ago when he was a puppy and vet said that was due to an empty stomach). So I fed him one small piece of chicken breast....that remained in his stomach. We went back to bed. This morning at our regular 7AM time I fed him rice and chicken and he ate it and kept it. It is now over three hours and no throw up! But he has not poo'd and that worries me more than the throw up! He is on antibiotics ending today and one of the many side effects is vomit and diarrhea. So,maybe!! I just don't know. If this continues and he has not poo'd he is off to vet's tomorrow. They are closed today.
Hi SwampDonkey...yes, I thought of that too. Still, I think if they are like us humans, even if we don't eat or drink, we do "produce"!! He finally did a very small poo so at least I know his "canal" is open. That was my biggest concern for him. There is something wrong with his tummy but hope he is on the mend. Either hit by a virus, side effects of antibiotics he has been on for kennel cough, or something iffy that he ate outdoors.
Just keep a look out for more blood in his poo. My pup developed colitis at this age and was very poorly indeed. Hopefully he'll be fine but my boy did a lot of the things your describing. I've been watching your post over the last few days and have been really concerned about your pup but not wanted to say anything because I wouldn't want yo worry you but you sound like I did when I knew something was wrong but wasn't sure what.I just hope everything settles and he's ok
Hi, thanks for the info SwampDonkey....I will certainly look for blood in his poo. If things have not improved substantially by this evening, he is off to the vet's tomorrow morning. He just finished a batch of antibiotics for the kennel cough.....so hope he doesnt get yet another run of antibiotics for this.....but, if that is what has to happen, we will do it.
Good news.....he had a large poo this afternoon and did not throw up his breakfast. Now I wonder what he will eat for dinner! At least his "canal" is open...I was concerned about blockage.
He is off his food(kibble)....gave him some rice...NO. Now cooking some chicken breast. He DID accept his favorite.....a Greenie!!! Will give him a small piece of chicken and keep the rest for tomorrow's breakfast for him.
How is he this morning? It must be worrying to see him so up and down, though as you say, good that he's had a poo. I think I might take him to the vet - at least it would be reassuring to know his temperature was normal.
Hello Joy, he had a good night(me too!). Gave him his kibble topped with half a chicken breast (already cooked) and he ate the chicken but did not touch the kibble. Yes, will take him to the vet today and see if he has a temp.....good tip. His nose is wet and cold which is a good sign. Will update later on today. Of course, he has not gone out to pee or poo even the door has been open now for over half an hour!!
