Ok so Charlie will try and get my attention to go to the toilet then I take him outside, he sniffs around then comes inside. This happens several times, then he does a wee or poo on my floor! Any suggestions?
Re: Toilet training advice please! Any time he does a pee or poo outside give him a super-dooper reward - and ignore the inside ones, little fuss as possible. Should help a bit for starters.
Re: Toilet training advice please! Lol I'd love to treat him but he's not done one outside yet! He's clearly an indoor dog :
Re: Toilet training advice please! How long do you wait outside with him? Might just need to wait out there longer till he's investigated the sniffs and remembers when he came for
Re: Toilet training advice please! Probably out there about 10 mins but Charlie wants to come in before then and just hops back in the house. I closed the back door so he couldn't and then he just sat there looking at me with a face that was clearly thinking "this woman is crazy its cold and wet out here i want to poo in comfort thanks very much!"
Re: Toilet training advice please! Well, it's hard to argue with his logic! One option, if you don't use it already, is making use of a crate that is large enough for him to lie down in stretched out but not much bigger. He won't poo in such a small area. Have you done any reading about using a crate for toilet training?

He's clearly an indoor dog : [/quote] I know it's really early days for you, but you probably do want to get him going outside pretty quickly - it's harder to break the habit of going inside once it's established. There are loads of great articles on the main site, but it boils down to taking him out (really often) and if he doesn't go, bringing him back in for 20 minutes before trying again. In the meantime, watch him like a hawk and whizz him back outside as soon as he shows any sign of needing to go, or confining him to an area that he thinks is his den and won't pee or poo in.
Re: Toilet training advice please! Hi Emma, it really is a question of waiting him out in the garden together with physically preventing him (crating or cuddling) from going indoors. Eventually he won't be able to hold himself in the garden and will do a wee. Have a look at this article Some pups seem determined not to go outside at first, especially when it is rainy or cold. Hang on in there, as soon as he has got the hang of it, you'll be fine. Pippa
Re: Toilet training advice please! Puzzle done this a few times in the first few weeks, we just stayed outside with her until she went and then reward her with loads of cuddles and treats and then go inside, but only after she had gone to the toilet. i would also try putting a command to when he is going to the toilet, even if he goes inside, try saying something like go toilet, then transfere that to when he is outside, but just say the word to him when he goes inside, but if he goes outside reward him and praise him
