I really don't seem to be getting very far toilet training Otis, he is now three months and has decided my rug is his favourite wee place. I wonder how often I should be putting him out ? I do really try and do it often, but maybe Im not doing it enough. I just clean it up when he does it indoors and praise when he does it outside. Tomorrow, Im going to try a bit harder and put him out every two hours. Also I haven't been taking his water up at night because its been hot, and I thought he needed the water. Im getting the rug cleaned this week so hopefuly that will get rid of the scent and he wont wee on it so much. At what age should he be housetrained I wonder ?

I was outside with Amy most of the time when we first got her. Even now I take her out more than every two hours. So I would say you really need to be outside more often.

I think you should being seeing a lot of progress by 3 months - perhaps, go back to the routine as though Otis isn't house trained - out every hour or 90 minutes, perhaps up the rewards for going in the garden, only considered "safe" for one hour after wee etc. etc.

Good luck - I think the accidents in the house are very frustrating! Your poor rug!

Washing or cleaning the rug will not get rid of the smell, as far as Otis is concerned. If it is a rug that can be rolled up and put away for a while, that's probably your best bet. And in the meantime, just watch him constantly like a hawk for any crouching, circling, or squeaking - the preludes to doing a wee! You'll get there, don't worry - some dogs are just quicker at this than others.

Sorry, I'm with Karen on this one too - the rug has to go (for now).
I think our vet suggested rugs were good from the point of view of walking and hips ( :-[ ) but they definitely hinder the toileting.
In our house though, once she had "cristened" a new room once we seemed to be fine - this was after the initial toilet training when we started letting her into more rooms.
Lots of scrubbing just does not do the trick ::)

All rugs were rolled up here too. Hattie took quite a while to toilet train, she was about 4 months but we got there and you will too. Out every hour and it was winter with snow on the ground and guess who's job it was to her out? Yep mine ::) Helen xx
