Hattie & Charlie were asleep on my bed last night (David is away ;)) at 2 am Charlie dived off the bed ran upto the window and barked and growled for 8 solid minutes, nothing I did would calm him down, eventually he ran downstairs into his bed. Our perimeter fence is being replaced so I don't know if someone was in the garden or an animal, but today he seems too frightened to go outside, he hasn't had a wee since 10 pm last night :( He is OK in himself currently shuving a rubber duck into my lap, but what do you think I should do? :-\ Thanks any help much appreciated xxx

Oh gosh it always freaks me out when they do that! We have no lights in our garden and Penny often rushes off barking and growling into the darkness when i let her out - I tell myself it's next doors cat (she hates him) but you can never be sure can you!

Have you tried coaxing him out with treats? Will he go out if Hattie goes out at the same time? Or with you on a lead so he senses he's got some back up?

Don't force it as you don't want to frighten him even more. Perhaps it was a fox or something and whatever it was the scent is still in the garden so he doesn't want to go out?

Oh dear Charlie, such a big strong boy, but underneath he's a cuddly puppy really, isn't he?

Could have been the black panther ;D Probably having a nightmare, or a fox outside, something he found scary. It has happened to senior Lab with me, he won't sleep downstairs now at night, so sleeps in my bedroom. He has been fine for nearly 9 years; not sure what goes on in their minds!

My two behaved just like that in the summer. Scott got over it quite quickly but scout was really nervy in the backyard for about a week. Ears flat, tail down but he forgot about it eventually. No idea what freaked them out.

Hope Charlie recovers quickly. If he's still worried next time he goes out you could try going with him and give him some extra special treats outside.

Glad there aren't any lingering effects. I hate being on my own too and check I've locked up at least twice x

Glad all is well now. :)

My Charlie is the worst alert dog in the world. He never alerts me to anything around the house or garden, ever. I think it's because there is just so much going on in London. He didn't even stir off his bed when 3 foxes had a massive, screaming fight in the front garden (and it's a tiny front garden).
