Total Recall - Training for both a cue (Come) and the whistle

Pippa - I’m absolutely loving the book Total Recall, have bought 2 Acme 211.5 whistles, cooked my meaty treats and will be starting whistle training soon
Question- we would like to keep the verbal COME cue as well as train for whistle recall.
Please can you tell us if we need to say ‘Come’ and do the pip pip pip pip pip on the whistle
Finally is there a directory that lists Gundog training classes nationwide?
Need to keep my boy mentally challenged

 

Hi Donna, welcome to the forum

I'm glad you're enjoying Pippa's book! When you start training with your new whistle cue, you'll do so very gradually, proofing the response carefully against increasing levels of distraction. To achieve the best possible results, that means:

- Keep using 'come' whenever you need to call your dog outside of recall training sessions for now. You don't want to poison your new whistle cue by using it in a situation it's not ready for, and being ignored!

- Don't use 'come' and your whistle cue at the same time. You don't want him to associate your whistle with another cue that he's already learned to ignore when it suits him!

The Gundog Club website has a list of affiliated trainers in the UK.
