My 2 and a half year old Chocolate hates having his nails trimmed. I know this is usual but he just runs a mile when I get the clippers. Ive had the visiting groomers and visits to the in store vets but they dont take enough off. I am aware of the amounts that can be removed but they dont seem to get anywhere near it and his claws are now getting so long that they MUST be uncomfortable. Are there any tried and tested ways to get cooperation from this willful hound !! ?
Cooper also hates the idea of nail trimming. We keep hers warn down, mostly by chasing tennis balls on pavement. I have a couple of places where there is no traffic, and I can launch tennis balls down a street and have her retrieve them. We do this once or twice a week. Her rear nails are really short. Her front nails do do look more like claws, but they don't touch the floor when she is standing, and they barely click at all. One of our friends has black lab about the same age as Cooper. Joey walks a lot and keeps his nails worn down just from walking on pavement or rough ground. We dog sit a friends Samoyed, and because he is not good off leash, he has to have his nails trimmed. Even with periodic trimming, Lokie's nails are usually so long they click a lot on our hard floors. It takes several people to trim his nails, we usually hit the quick on a few of them so we have to have styptic powder available. If he was easier to walk on lead, we might keep them worn down, but he is dog reactive when he is on lead, and he is not my dog, so I do minimal training or exercise with him.
I gave up on nail trimming long time ago. Vet does it 4 times a year at $28 a pop. Odd how he doesn't mind it at the vet but if he sees me with those clippers he's gone. Long nails that get hung up and ripped out will be a very serious and bloody situation.
