I saw 2 great 'dog-themed' films over the holidays, neither new, but I can highly recommend both.

One is 'The Cave of the Yellow Dog', which is Mongolian (!), with English subtitles. It features a family of Mongolian sheep herders, and the older daughter (8 years old, perhaps?) finds a puppy and brings it back to the yurt... To her father's displeasure. It is a beautifully filmed, delightful story.

The second is 'Bonbon', which is an Argentinian/Patagonian film (also with english subtitles) about a kindly, out-of-work mechanic, who through doing someone a good turn, inherits a pedigree Dogo Argentino. This changes his life in delightful, surprising ways...

I loved both these films, which are so not Hollywood. both are very touching, and yet manage to avoid too much sentimentality. Not action-packed, but thoughtful, entertaining and delightful. My daughter loved them too - and so did Poppy (well, she barked at the tv a couple of times when there was whining or barking ;)).
