Me and Penny have just come back from the vet (2nd physio session) and I am totally saddened to have been sitting next to a dog wearing a prong collar :(

He seemed like a lovely old boy, a yellow lab cross of some sort, very friendly. And he had this hideous metal contraption around his neck. Oh and he was still pulling the lady all over the place so clear it wasn't even working!!

Feel so sorry for that old boy :(

Only heard about these recently on facebook with a picture of a dog wearing one with horrific neck injuries.

    Absolutely disgusting!

I would like to think that our vet would say something but I don't know if would be there place if it's not medically causing a problem at present.

If it isn't making any difference to the pulling then it cannot be effective so cannot be painful. INMO?

I probably wasn't clear in my short post Stacia, the collar definitely got the attention of the spaniel so I guess it was sharp enough for that but it didn't seem to have any lasting effect in that the dog would pull again quite quickly, the spaniel's only 15 months old and I have suggested alternative approaches :(

I was thinking about the old Lab, missed the bit about the spaniel! Spaniel far too young to resort to prong collar and doesn't even need anything like that; agree that alternative methods should have been used.

I have no doubt that the collar was uncomfortable for the poor old lab boy I saw, maybe painful but he had such thick fur it was hard to see. I meant it wasn't having any effect on his pulling as they are supposedly designed for. No doubt the lab had just become acclimatised to the pain :(
