Aaargh. Tarka is lame at the start of the shooting season! I'd been noticing a very slight lameness during heavy exercise over the last couple of weeks but as she got worse took her in to work for some xrays and ultrasound. Good news - no elbow or shoulder joint dysplasias. Bad news - she has bicipital tenosynovitis, a sort of repetitive strain injury of a tendon in her shoulder. Could take months and months to settle - she is in demand as a picking up dog just now (excellent in/over water or on long blinds) and I am having to turn down all her invitations (I am well aware it is the dogs who are invited, not me.....). She adores picking up, as do I, and she is currently snoozing off her anaesthetic on the sofa at home, blissfully unaware it is the end of the season for us for sure.....Aaaaargh.
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka So sorry to hear that - it must be a blow. After all your hard work. So difficult! Good news that it will heal though.
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh what a shame that she is mssing out on her sessions Lochan , hoping she is loads better real soon x
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh no, that is a real blow! So sorry. Hope Tarka is better soon. I didn't realize she was such a successful picking up dog. How old is she?
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh that's rubbish so sorry you're both missing out! She'll just have to dream of birds til next season. Hope she recovers well
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Thanks for your good wishes folks. Just a bit of a blow really, Tarka is three next month and runs a double life of full-time softy and pampered sofa surfer who does gundog stuff on the side to control her hunting instincts (think Helen's Charlie in hunting ability when younger...). This year however she has been picking up and has a lot of natural talent which is invariably inhibited by my ineptness, but other folk picking up recognise her ability. She is a very fit, athletic and bold dog and will happily work at quite a distance from me if required and she did a stunning blind pickup about 100m away from me through a fence and over a hill into a dip on the first day of the season here and has been regularly in demand since. Her natural talent over-coming my poor handling mostly! Anyway, posting here somehow helps with the disappointment as everyone else understands what it feels like to put so much into training not to be able to indulge your hobby just at the time it all comes together....ho hum, there's always next year....
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka She sounds wonderful, don't think we've ever seen a photo, would love to see one if you fancy posting some time.

[/quote] Join the club! I feel and totally understand your disappointment, I'm in the same situation. But it is me who is injured, all the dogs are fit and raring to go. I haven't quite written off this season yet, there is still hope I will make a few days. Hope Tarka gets better soon.
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka I'm really sorry about Tarka, frustrating, upsetting and downright rubbish! I'm sure you are doing yourself down though ,bet you are a great team when she is at full fitness. Thankfully you could examine her yourself and get straight to the diagnosis ,recovery time could have been wasted if she hadn't had the benefit of that......really sorry for your disappointment Best wishes Angela
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Thankfully she'll get better in the long run but bad luck otherwise.
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh Lochan I am really sad to read your post and wishing Tarka a speedy recovery. You have done amazingly well with Tarka as she was like Charlie the absconder also 3 next month, and this gives me true hope. I know hard hard you have worked to resolve her absconding issues and I am following hot on your heels I would love to think maybe one day but I doubt it as I am clueless : I am also sorry that you are not getting out to do what you enjoy, but next year she will be back to full health and abiliy and doing what she obviously has a great talent for Best wishes, xxx
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh what horrible luck So sorry for you - hope she improves quickly.
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka What a blow I hope she improves as quickly as possible. I'm sure she won't know what she's missing and will be happy to indulge her couch potato side...
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh dear, how disappointing!! I hope she heals well...in the meantime, snuggle up!!
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Poor girl is still hobbling about today. We're off to see an old vet friend who's an orthopaedic surgeon on Monday just to see if he thinks there's anything else we can do to improve things for her a bit quicker. I'll keep you posted but it's looking like many months of rehab just now. Sigh.
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka i am so sorry to read this i wish tarka the best of luck for a speedy recovery,........i hope and pray she in improves soon
Re: Shoulder tendon injury in Tarka Oh poor girl , good luck with your vet friend hope something can be done to help her recovery. Keeping everything crossed for Tarka and you. x
