How is everyone doing with the heat in the SE of the UK? Chepi and I keep going to stand in her paddling pool. Then I soak a tea towel and wipe her face and her under-carriage, which she likes! Otherwise we are both slothing like beached whales; it's not even worth putting the fan on as it just chucks out hot air. Everyone I know says I should cope better being Australian - that's why I moved!
The towel is a good idea. I'll try it later and if it's good I'll try it on Lady. Took Lady out at 7 this morning and it was already too hot.
Poppy hates the wet towel, but she will lie on her back and allow me to rub water over her tummy and chest. She loves that! Otherwise - walks in the morning and evening, in the shade and near water wherever possible.
I went in the woods today, lovely and cool, only joking . So hot. I bought Mabel some doggy ice cream made by Billy and Margot. It's not a brand I'm familiar with but she loves the banana and honey flavour. Highly recommend as a treat in seriously hot weather.
Walks at 6.30am late evening walks in the woods with a running stream. Ice cube tray with soaked kibble. Must make sure not to tip a couple in my G&T tonight!

A day above 30, and the unions are calling for everyone to be allowed to wear shorts and vests (yes, vests) to work, the trains are cancelled because it's the wrong kind of heat on the track and we have a level 3 weather alert. You? You'd be wearing a cardi because it felt a bit nippy....
Haha, it's been 33C here today, up to 36 "feels like 42" by the weekend. We had a walk at 7:30am and another at 7pm, finishing with a swim in a little plunge pool. Frozen turkey drumstick for lunch and a frozen mince kong for a morning snack when I was at the gym. The pups are loving it
I know I haven't posted anything in a looonnng time, but I do read them and this one caught my eye. We've been having days that are not-so-hot, but very humid (central Minnesota in the upper central US), which can be equally as risky for a crazy, running lab. After a good, long run around yesterday, I used my garden hose to flood Daisy's entire belly area, from armpits to tail, and she loved it! Stood, spread-eagled, and just let me flush. Then she tried to eat the water coming out of the hose, so we had a water fight and we both got thoroughly doused. Henry, who is a more sedate 4.5 years old, sat and watched us, muttering, "Silly, silly, silly..." until Daisy jumped him.
Of course it is! It's the weekend!! It shows a bit of rain for Sunday evening here, too, so you're not alone. I should think we'll be glad of it by then!
You are going to throw me off the Forum for this.......But my dog loathes water. I bought her a paddling pool. The only way I can get her near it is to throw a Kong in. Then she will stick her head in just enough to get her prize. She barks at the hose. I encouraged (gentle push really) her to go in the water at the nature reserved. She developed concrete bum. The only time she has shown any interest in the water was when she looked as if she was going to venture into the fountain in the Memorial Gardens. But the pond was inky black so I wasn't exactly keen on that and I wasn't sure how the resident fish would feel about it She has had about 90% of her food in Kongs the last few days, I figure the big smelly lollies will cool her down. Yesterday I spent 40 minutes walking her up and down the alley behind the houses opposite. It was shaded by trees and had a cool breeze wafting down it. I could feel my brain melt from boredom.
I didn't let my chaps go for a walk at all yesterday and will be just be seeing how bad it is before I even try an evening walk today. My dogs are old and it affects them badly. My oldest (14) has difficulties breathing normally due to health problems but my 12 year old was having problems breathing yesterday. I got wet towels and the paddling pool and they were both ok, but it was hard to sit and hear the oldest struggle and the 12 year old start to. She only struggled for a bit (about 20 mins)and with a good paddle and a bit of a mist with a damp towel was ok, but the oldest really did have a hard time coping. I took him round to a friends business they have air con and that helped. I'm ginger and hate the heat too so we're very good hot weather buddies sitting in the paddling pool in the shade at all times and sitting on a tiled floor with damp towels dreaming of snow and rain. My young dog was fine but even he had to have a good lie down and a paddle. Anyone else got any hot weather ideas we have a small pool, misters, hose pipes damp towels,and stock ice cubes and my old boy loves a fan. S
Tina,Dex doesn't love water to be honest ....he will go in if there are other dogs to play with or if he really likes what I've thrown for him to retreive.He doesn't seek to get out of his depth and just swim for the love of swimming.He hates the saltiness of the sea.He went to a new Dog Park/Daycare centre this week and I had to leave him for a couple of hours induction....one of the supervisors said she had to get in the pool with him to get him in at first All the trouble and expense I went to to find him a paddling pool....I had to get the blummin' clicker out to get him in! X
Took Fred out at 6 this morning on to the golf course and used one of their ponds. He loved it. Back at home went for another rest in his bed. I have his paddling pool out for later.
Wow you all are having a typical Texas summer! I walk Myles in the morning before the temp rises too much. Then he gets very short "sniff" walks with pet sitter when I'm at work. When I get home and it's 95F and sunny, we head to back yard and stick water hose in paddling pool. He thinks this is the most fun and will play for about 30 minutes. He gets good and wet, then I will take him on a 15-20 min walk in shade around the neighborhood. Wet dog makes a huge difference in keeping him cool. But I still keep walks short and try to stay out of sun. All of this has worked well and he cools down at home in the air conditioning nicely.
It's been crazy hot here in Idaho too lately....generally we don't get the 35-38 stuff until August...but stay 26-30 most of the summer. The 10 day forecast is for 35 or so all the way through. Thankfully at night, at our house, it drops down to a lovely 18 or cooler....living in the foothills of the mountains will do that for you. Bella has a good play outside in the mornings, and then heads to work with her dad to enjoy the AC throughout the day. I pick her up mid-evening and we head home...it's still 26-28 around our place about 7pm...but we can play for a bit as it continues to cool off. I do tend to keep her rowdy ball chasing play time much more limited, and offer her kibble ice cubes and fruit smoothie cubes after we play. She generally just comes and sprawls on the cool wood floors in the house, or the cool grass in the shade until she thinks she needs to play some more.
