Hi all, Newbie to this forum & to owning a dog Millie is 8 &1/2 weeks old and settled in fantastically, My concern is about the time scale as to when I can let Millie my golden lab down on the ground after her vaccinations are compleat, my vet says 2 weeks after the 2nd jab which will then take Millie to 12 weeks old, the end (or very near end) of the socialising period ! Obviously she will be getting heavier by the week and I want to make the most of this socialising period, but at the same time worrying about my back :-\
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy hi welcome to you and millie as soon as she has had her second jab you will be able to walk her out of the vets , well that is what i did, i am lynne with jasper 6 month old black lab
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Hi from me and Lilly - 3 year old black girl. Welcome to the forum! I think we were told 2 weeks after the second vaccine is "safe". But there is lots of possible socialising before that. Mostly working your arm muscles carrying Millie about. I don't know if you have read this on Pippa's main site? http://www.thelabradorsite.com/?page_id=1454 and the bit Puppy Vaccination FAQs answers exactly the question you ask. Its well worth a read! jac
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy oppps sorry you're right jac we did have to wait 2 weeks after his second jab, i apologize, we had the first jab at 9 week , then chip at 11 week, followed by second jab at 12 week , went out for the first time at 14 week
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Hi, Yes two weeks after last jab, that's what I was told when I was at the vets with Otis. Maggie
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Hi there, Welcome from me and Dexter ,yellow lab ,9 months old in 6 days Enjoy Millie and watch you back,Jacqui is right, read where she has directed you but it will mean hefting Millie about quite a bit ...... X
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Many thanks, yes I have read just about every article on this site I just wondered how you all managed towards the later weeks, I've taken her out a few times already, yesterday was roughly 20 mins and got me thinking " ok at the moment but at 11-12 weeks Ouch" maybe I'll need a buggy lol. Off to socialise at car boot now (with husband )
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy We used to carry our first puppy around in a backpack when he got too heavy to hold in our arms. It wasn't a big backpack and he had his head poking out the top. It was the kind of backpack with a hole and a drawstring at the top (not the kind the zips down each side). He was a really chilled out puppy though
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Oh have you got any photos of him,was that Nicolae....would love to see him popping his head out! X
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy That was Nicolae It was in the pre-digital days, I'm afraid.... There is probably a photo of him in a shoe-box somewhere. He sat up with his paws over the edge and his head out. So cute.
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Thanks for the tip Rachael, I walked around for a lot longer than I would of without the rucksack, obviously she got loads of attention and behaved brilliantly so got rewarded with yet another new toy I did think I'd get a warm trickle leaking from the bag at some point but she managed to cross her legs till we got home ! Clever girl.
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy What a lovely photo , its great to get them socialised from as young as possible
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Hi from me and Poppy, well done on the dedicated socialization!! ;D
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Oh, how cute is that?? She looks 100% adorable The rucksack looks like a good solution (and you could put a nappy in the bottom).
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Oh Kez,,what a cracking photo, lovely to see you too,I'd have loved to have had that time with my dog...I didn't get him until he was 5 months old......he's divine and he is going to have a lovely life with an owner like you x
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy I was so lucky to get a puppy from a lovely lady that let me visit her each week since 2weeks old, it seemed like forever before I could bring her home, but now that she is home I bet her puppy days will fly by. After reading loads before getting her I was a little apprehensive about all the possible problems like crate training, getting up every 3 hours in the night, toilet training etc but not bragging or anything but she has settled in really well (so far so good & fingers crossed) apart from attacking ankles every now & then
Re: Vaccination time period for puppy Ankle snapping goes hand in glove with Lab puppy ownership Kez Best thing to do is a firm NO , and distract her,but it is very normal , juts play in their eyes How lovely that you could visit from 2 weeks , that must have helped Millie to settle in , sounds like you are doing very well with her and good for you with all the reading too
