My just two year old Lab seems to be getting worse with his hair loss on the above mentioned areas. He has just had two months on Advocate and did look slightly better until yesterday, when he appeared to lose the hair on his legs again in areas. He doesn't scratch much, about four to six times a day and this is always on the left side of his neck. His skin is not red or inflamed. Does anyone else have this problem?
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. I can't help sorry, but it sounds quite extreme now...I'd say vet visit, but you know that's what I always say! ;D
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. I can't help either but agree with Dexter, maybe visit to vets. Hope he gets well soon.
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. Haven spoken to vet hence Advocate (just in case) plus Effavet Capsules. He was seen by another vet when he was in for a tummy upset who thought it might be an allergy but nothing else said. If it was a food allergy, would he not be scratching more? If it a food allergy, what would you suggest I do about it?? Thanks for replies, much appreciated.
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. Poor boy. I don't really have many ideas, I would go for the vet too. I guess food allergies (I know wheat and chicken have been culprits for other things) or even something like thyroid could be a cause?? Skin infections I would have thought would cause more itching?? Is his weight steady and poops well formed?? Gosh.....definitely the vet for me
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. Yes thanks, weight is steady and poops mainly well formed, though he has never had very good poops, always a bit soft, but much better lately. When he was a puppy he got spots on his belly and this was due to cover giving him little scratches which became infected. I am just wondering if he has sensitive skin and going into brambles now is loosening his hair or all this rain and mud is having an effect! I am sure all this wet has stopped the Advocate from doing its job, there may be a low grade mite?
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. Could it be fox mange ? Otis still has a tiny patch on one of his legs despite frontline ing him, Im hoping it will go, it dosent bother him at all not itchy, just wonderd, although sounds like a vet visit for diagnosis would be best.
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. I was going to say mange too....sounds like some of the coyotes you see around here
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. Vet has seen it, said it could be an allergy. Spoke previously to another vet on phone and as he had a little hair loss round his eyes, she wondered about possibility of mange, hence Advocate. Maggie68, that is encouraging that it could be fox mange as Rourke sounds like your dog, no itching! My GSPs had fox mange years ago and that was very obvious, red and itchy. I think I will try another month of Advocate, vet only gave me 2 months but as the weather has been so wet, another month may tell me one way or the other.
Re: Very little hair on abdomen and very motheaten looking legs. Poor pup! Hope you get to the bottom of it Stacia.
