I have gone through the search facility and got some usefull info, but wanted a bit of conformation please as my vet is shut today - emergency line only. Widg is almost a year and thurs morn I found a couple of yellow cow-pat style puddles in the garden, I mistakenly carried on his normal meals and thought it would clear up as nothing had changed in his diet. Fri night, while I was out, my OH gave him a 'jumbone' chew thingy, she was then up several times to let him out!! I didn't give him breakfast but white rice for lunch (I assumed one dose was enough but reading previous posts people are giving rice until it thickens?) He is fine in every other way. Eats drinks lots of energy etc. 1. I assume it is 'normal' for runny stools to last a few days? 2. I read elsewhere about giving brown rice as it's a binder with some scrambled egg? 3. Do I continue on the rice diet until he thickens
Re: Very loose stools - further info It's usually advisable to feed the chicken and rice for at least 24 hours - one meal isn't usually enough for whatever it is to leave the system. Then start gradually reintroducing the normal food. During the time of feeding rice and introduction of normal food you shouldn't give any treats or chews at all as this could upset things further. Also if you reintroduce those gradually once everything is ok back on normal food you can see if it was those that caused the upset in the first place. Personally I find the pedigree brand treats quite rich - markies are a big no no in my books, I've only had a handful of dogs that can actually tolerate them and they seemed to be the major factor in upset tummies in the kennels. Also with the jumbones from personal experience Penny can only stomach the beef ones - I bough her a chicken on and a Turkey one once and they went straight through her. Tbh I don't feed chicken and rice when Penny has an upset tummy. Depending on how bad it is I just cut out all extras for a day or two, or starve her for 12 hours and then give her a tin of chappie dog meat for a couple of days until she's ok. Unless it's severe or ongoing I wouldn't call the vet. But I have a lot of experience with dogs and diarrhoea - probably the most common illness in a rescue kennels. I was also told by a vet that chappie dog meat has pretty much the same ingredients as the fancy royal canin sensitivity control food.
Re: Very loose stools - further info Hope he is back to normal soon! 1. I assume it is 'normal' for runny stools to last a few days? Yes, it is normal. 2. I read elsewhere about giving brown rice as it's a binder with some scrambled egg? I think that any combo of (a) brown rice or white rice plus (b) some chicken breast (cooked in with the rice) or scrambled egg would be good. 3. Do I continue on the rice diet until he thickens Yes, I'd keep going with the rice plus either chicken or egg till things improve. I personally do not skip my dog's meals if his stools are runny (almost always from eating something he shouldn't). Actually, if I know sure it's something he ate I usually just keep going with his normal diet and wait it out... But he is the kind of dog who very rarely has a bowel problem. For a dog who seems to easily get runny stools I'd do the chicken/egg and rice thing.
Re: Very loose stools - further info My first step is cut out all treats and if still loose go for 24 hrs on chicken and rice. Nice and sloppy mixture Jumbones go through Lilly
Re: Very loose stools - further info Thanks for the reassurance, I've been and brought eggs and a bag if plain white rice. Other than that he's fine, bags of energy and completely himself, I've felt around his tummy and he shows no sign of pain. He did a couple of little squirty bits which seemed to have mucous and a bit of blood (I know a little blood goes a long way) he seemed to be straining and the 'net suggested this could be expected after a bout of tummy upset as the body tries to rid the upset. Have you all seen this? My feeling is if he had a more serious problem he would be tender and lethargic. Sorry to seem OTT but he is our first dog and are worried about him!!
Re: Very loose stools - further info Hi, this is something I went through with Harley for several months. She had been on RC gastro since 2 weeks after we got her, then out of the blue she kept getting diarrhoea and eventually lots of blood. She had lots of meds and weeks on chicken and rice. Eventually we found out she was wheat intolerant. If you are giving rice, don't drain it and the gooey sludgy water is good for them. I also fed chicken and occasionally egg to ensure she was getting a balanced diet as much as I could. If he's still the same on Tuesday I would pop him to the vet just to make sure

If the visit proves to be unnecessary at least it will have put your minds at rest I know how stressful it is when your dog is obviously not 100% well.
Re: Very loose stools - further info I've just seen Widgeon has been poorly....I hope a little better today? When Dexter had his first really bad episode after I'd got his diet right my Mum told me to give him scrambled egg and rice, when it hadn't cleared up I took him to the vet and she said not to give him egg ???......to give him chicken and rice ????i can't remember asking why not egg, sorry I do know that I saw improvement once I changed to chicken but it was a few days in anyway so could have just been coincidence Angela x
Re: Very loose stools - further info Jumbones have the same effect on Tatze. She had two, I made the connection and stopped buying them. Pro fibre is great for firming up stools http://www.amazon.co.uk/Protexin-Pro-Fibre-Dogs-500-g/dp/B00BEXP5MA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399273770&sr=8-1&keywords=pro+fibre
Re: Very loose stools - further info Thanks everyone. Last night he did something which resembled a normalish poo, bit soft, bit small but the right shape!!! As yet nothing today (which I hope is good as it's clearly not 'going through him') fingers crossed. It's his first birthday next Sat so hope he's on form for that
