Every time I give Charlie fresh bones from the butchers he gets the runniest poo explosions, almost liquid, does anyone have any idea why this happens? It doesn't happen after chicken bones (raw of course). Thanks Helen x
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Sorry I thought I had posted under 'Health" :
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Are the bones ones that the butcher sells especially for pets? I'm wondering if Charlie is a bit sensitive to the bacteria that can be in raw food (regardless of the quality or source....not casting any nasturtiums upon your butcher's food handling practices ).
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Lilly is similar. Not watery and explosive just pretty loose. I think the raw meat and marrow is pretty rich when they are normally kibble fed. We found that if you don't use the bones right away they are worse so I suspect bacteria may have a role here too. We usually give one on a Sunday if the weather is good as she will stay out all day with her bone given half a chance and I am home on a monday if she needs extra pitstops as a result.
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Thanks ladies, when we go to the butcher we just ask for 'dog bones' and we get a bag of bones and not sure what they are just vey large knuckle type. Got them Friday pm and fed them Sunday afternoon but they were of course refrigerated. Charlie has a pretty sensitive tummy so maybe they are too rich, might just stick to chicken bones from now on. Helen x
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post I could never give Bones bones (!!) without being very aware that he would have an upset tummy the next day... Poppy has a cast iron stomach and never seems to have a problem at all. I guess it is just different from dog to dog. Best go with what suits Charlie, I think.
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post It is 'behaviour' really Helen, bowel behaviour! ;D Nothing to help from me and my kibble fed,3 items on the menu boy...bet Dex would love a bone, poor lad! X
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Never give mine bones for that very reason; have tried but the consequences are.....
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Yep I think we will stick with chicken carcasses etc. Hattie has a cast iron stomach, nothing upsets her Helen x
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Hi I give my 2 antlers to chew. They are suitable for sensitive dogs. I ve always been a bit scared of bones ever since giving Murphy one. A piece came out the other end with blood! I started giving theses 2 nylabones after their breakfast before they go back in their pen. I found giving them something to chew on helped stop them trashing their kennel. Ive sewed their bed up numerous times sewing is not my strong point. I was concerned though in case they bit a piece off the nylabone as obviously it isn't digestable. Before I found the forum I found marchstonelabradors web site which has lots of useful info. They reccomened antlers. I e mailed them about safety of them etc . Antlers don't splinter, they are long lasting, don't have a problem with bacteria, don't smell and aren't messy. I decided to give them a go and the dogs love them. They have them after breakfast for about 15 mins and they go and sit looking up at where I keep them. They are expensive. I get original extra strong just less than £11 but they last at least 4 weeks so work out at less than 50p a day. The out side is very hard so I always keep my eye on them in case they try to bite down but they never have. As they chew it softens its funny stuff They certainly keep my monsters good. : The web site I get them from are very nice. The first 2 I ordered were different shapes Scott found his harder to chew would've been fine if they'd been the same. I rang the web site to ask if I could request a rough size they said they'd replace the antler and donate the returned one to the local dogs home which I thought was very kind of them.
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Hi Jen, I bought two of these antlers but then there was a thread a while ago that said they were too hard and could cause damage to teeth so no more antlers. There doesn't seem to be an issue with chicken bones so chicken it is : Thanks Helen x
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post I dumped the antlers too after the post Helen mentions - with a lot of regret, I have to say, as Charlie loved them and I'd just bought a new batch, as Jen says, they are not cheap! I don't do bones, and stick to the rule of if I can't make a dent in it with my thumb nail, it's not ok for teeth. Nylabones have gone too. Charlie tries to crunch down really hard on things, so I think he is a teeth damage risk. Reading the nylabone website though, it does all seem to depend on a dog's "chewing style" and the size of the chew. I've been using thin sticks of rawhide recently - when Charlie is mad to have a good chew - no knobs for choke risk, and I keep an eye on him and swap the very last small bit for a biscuit. They give him slightly runny poo, but not too much, and just once. He gets one every other day or so. The other thing that I think are great are kong goody bones, I ram hard biscuits into the ends - they use much less food than round kongs, and are much quicker to prepare.
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Very expensive, cost £21.00 for 2 I have always used bones but the knuckle ends and then take them away or chicken wings etc. that can be totally consumed. Nylabones not interested here and I use those twisty hide chews too which they love. It's a mine field Helen x
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post Poppy's antler is lying disused in the garden... She ran around with it for about 10 minutes, then decided it was really, really boring and hasn't touched it since. :
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post I know the antlers are a definite tooth damage risk which I worry about and is why I always watch them but unfortunately I haven't found another long lasting chew that's digestable. I don't think they are much harder than the nylabones I got them. I don't really want to give them an edible chew daily it wouldn't last 2 mins anyway. I remember when chicken bones even raw were a no no because of splintering. My old dog got raw hide stuck in his throat which was quite scary and put me off them. Also I have to be careful what I give these two even the liver treats I've been using for clicker training have loosened them up! They aren't interested in kongs although I haven't tried the kong goody bones perhaps I should try them. ??? Just need somebody to come up with a magic solution a chew that incorporates everything. ;D

Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post If any of you guys still use the antlers, then they can be made more appealing by soaking them either in boiling water or stock for 30 mins or an hour. Either that or find a friendly dog to take an interest in it then it will become the best thing since sliced bread ;D
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post I took my antlers back after Lochan mentioned the thumbnail test...Dex does crunch down on nylabomes like he could snap them though so they are probably just as harsh......I've only really noticed that in the last couple of days because I've been holding them for him while he's in the cone....apart from Kongs and this crazy looking Burger King burger thing my sister bought nothing else stands up to the 'Jaws of Dex' ! ;D
Re: Very runny pooh after bones - sorry disgusting post I thought there wasn't a lot of difference between the nylabone and the antler hardness as well Angela. That's why I've stuck with the antler at least that's digestable upto a point. I keep a very close eye on them and although they are avid chewers they never seem to bite down although it does worry me. I'd heard about soaking them in water to liven them up as well although my two have never got bored with them.
