Hey, I’m new, trying this out. I’ve owned 2 labs. They were the perfect pups, I swore my next one I’d breed. My puppy is only 8 months old. I think he’s too young. I’m also thinking about shelter dogs, and them being over run, why bring more pups in the world. Can I find homes for all the puppies? I just would like to breed to share this perfect pup with the world. He’s from a great bloodline, Master hunters. I’m just wanting information on what I need to know, maybe eventually find a mate to breed with. Definitely when time is right for both dogs, and if I should. I want to do the right thing by dogs and their pups. Any kind constructive advice is great. Thank you!
I am assuming that you are in the US, so not sure of the details for you, but basically, what you need to do is wait until he is old enough to have him hip and elbow scored, eye tested and DNA screened. You would then need to prove him in the field (hunt tests etc). All of this is very expensive and time consuming and obvioulsy if he fails any of the above, then he would not be bred from. When you are training and competing him, you will be getting to know people who may like to use him in the future once he has his titles. There is no need to breed from him if he is just nice, you need to make sure you are bring new puppies into the word to better the breed,
So here's the main thing: It's not up to you whether your male dog is bred. It will be up to a bitch owner to choose to use your dog. The bitch owner will look at all the available studs around - the titled dogs, the fully health-tested dogs - and will choose the stud which is desirable and which is going to sell puppies. There are a bazillion stud dogs out there. It is a very competitive arena. If you want your dog to be desirable to a bitch owner, you need to: - Complete full health-testing. That means getting hips and elbows x-rayed and scored at 2 years old with the OFA. It means getting eyes tested. And it means multiple DNA tests run. There are loads of resources online for the health tests that are required from Labradors before breeding. It will cost you approaching $1000 probably, to fully health test your dog. Note that, breeding your dog once, you will not recoup that money and will be at a loss. - Second, your dog will need titles so he stands out. At the very least, you will need to show you are actively involved in working and competing with your dog. Why should someone choose your dog, over any other dog out there? Especially when if they pay a few hundred dollars more, they can use a fully health-tested super highly titled stud dog....
Wow that’s more than I thought!! I have his parents whole bloodline paperwork, and his registration. That’s super in-depth! Yea I think my husband was hoping to recoup what we paid for him. I wanted him to have a puppy because in little words I wanted another nice puppy from his bloodline. When ya find a good dog you never want him to go away! I have a lot to consider! Thank you!
