After much thought I finally decided to coax Juno upstairs and shampoo her irritated skin on her back legs while standing in the bath. With OH lifting her into the bath I thought it wouldn't be too bad as she has been in the bath before; that said Juno did not like the bath and wanted to get out! having visions of he damaging her elbow I managed to quiet her by talking and stroking while OH held her. She wasn't too keen on being showered with warm water around her belly and legs but submitted for the first shampoo and rinse. Second shampoo was rewarded with quite a few treats while she stood in the bath quietly, not for the 5 minutes recommended but I wasn't pushing my luck too much . After a nice warm rinse and a rub dry Juno happily walked back down the stairs slowly and had another treat sitting on her bed - which had been stripped for washing as a precaution. So the shampooing wasn't too traumatic - shame about trying to clean up the bathroom from 1 wet, moulting Labrador . Round 2 on Saturday , but the antibiotics seem to have reduced the redness so fingers crossed. Any suggestion on the best way of cutting up tablets. Juno's antibiotic dose is 3/4 of a tablet twice a day. Giving a half was easy in March after her surgery as the tablet has a ridge to split in two, but halving that tiddly bit ......
Glad it went okay, what a star Juno is. Regarding the tablet sorry I'm absolutely no help whatsoever that's such a fiddly thing to do.
Ah well done Juno. Lots of rewards is definitely the way to go Depends on the size of the tablet and whether it is flat, but try using a very sharp knife to 'saw' a score across it to make it easier to quarter. It doesn't matter much if she doesn't get an exact quarter every time; what she gets over or under in the morning will be made up for with the evening dose. It will make no material difference to the effectiveness.
Oh cleaning the bathroom afterwards is the worst! Glad she handled the bath with good grace, even if she didn't love it. What a good girl.
We are back from a few days with my daughter, her husband and my two granddaughters in St. Augustine, FL .... and their two chocolate labs .... and the visit went so much better than I anticipated with Maui .... more on that later, but wanted to comment that I'm glad Juno survived the bath and stairs ... and you too! Regarding the pills, I have much experience on that as our Maggie in her older years was probably on more medication than both my husband and I will be on for a lifetime! Poor girl. But, we had to split many pills that way. I like the suggestion of sawing a ridge across to make it easier. I found using a very sharp knife on a cutting board much like slicing a garlic clove worked well. Also, the fact mentioned above about a little over or under can be made up later in the day is true as well. Good luck. One would think they could do something about that 1/4 and 3/4 thing, wouldn't one?!! LOL!!
I must admit I haven't worked worked out why it's 3/4 of a tablet morning and evening - such a weird amount. Good to see you back on the forum and that you and Maui have had a good time.
I wash my dogs outside they seem calmer. I used as a watering can the water doesn't come out so fast and its very controlable. My neighbour saw me doing it and descided to give it a go' she found it easier to. The clean up after is easier too. I put my younger dogs lead on to do it still but both the older ones will just stand and let me do it. I think they like the big soapy masage and the fishy treats
The only problem is that the part to bathe for Juno is the skin and fur on the inside of her rear legs and around that part of her belly and it also needs to be warm water for the rinsing; it's why we ended in the bathroom so I could use the shower head to direct a nice warm flow of water to the area concerned. Rinsing wouldn't work with a watering can, and the vet had said it was not necessary to shampoo her fully especially as we only used her Advantix on Tuesday evening on vet direction.
