We've set the date. We're taking Holly in to be spayed on 6th Feb. OH and I are both a bit nervous, but we know we're doing the right thing.
Re: We've set the date It'll mean that there are a lot of things you just won't have to worry about afterwards It's a very safe procedure and she'll be just fine.
Re: We've set the date Just for the record, Lilly was absolutely fine about it. We got her spayed just at the 6 month mark. She was pretty much fine afterwards - a bit pathetic after she got home but right as rain come the next morning. Didn't need a lampshade. Didn't particularly lick her wound (just the itchy shaved bits ) She was far far worse following a low dose tramadol injection for a relatively minor soft tissue injury we over-reacted to - but that's another story..... I guess they are all different - some cruise through it, other make a bit of a meal about it, just like people. Its a positive worthwhile thing to do (I feel) and I'm sure you will give her all the TLC she needs.
Re: We've set the date Thanks for the reassurance. We know we're doing the right thing, but we still feel a bit of guilt about putting her under the knife. I think the hardest bit will be trying to keep her from doing any damage afterwards. She's such an energetic dog! I've arranged a few days off work while she recovers.
Re: We've set the date Hi, Holly will be fine, I think it's harder on the owners . Try not to worry, you will though I know. If it helps Hattie was fine after her spay too x
Re: We've set the date Yep, definitely harder on us lot :-\ Its the guilt. Just think how much less worry you will have afterwards and how much more fun could be had ;D
Re: We've set the date How you are feeling is completely normal....it's a horrible day the day they go in ( I've only had a boy dog so I know it's a much bigger op for the girls ) but you are doing the right thing for her long term health and safety if you don't wish her to have pups.i felt better once the appointment was booked as the decision was made.....when we went to pick Dexter up,he came skidding out the back of the vets like he was auditioning for Dancing On Ice...I hit the floor down to his level like I'd been shot otherwise he would have jumped up all over me....and he'd had a double operation that day he bounced back quick from the castration quite literally! And whilst I still feel horrible he had to go through it I haven't regretted doing it for a minute x
Re: We've set the date I really feel for you , my girl is two weeks post spay now so I understand how tough it is to leave them . For the record , the hardest part for us was trying to keep her calm , having to walk on lead etc . but every day means another day of healing , they bounce back so well
Re: We've set the date Yup. What they all said. We had Lady done when she was about 10 months. Went in with her and cuddled her while they put her under so she didn't feel unsafe. felt like an absolute ogre when I picked her up because she looked like she had been dragged through a hedge backwards. She was right as rain the next day to the extent she ate a tennis ball and had to be rushed back for emergency x-rays and check out - all ok though and pooh "interesting" the next day. The difficult bit was stopping her from being your typical manic Labrador puppy for a few days. No issues with the tiny visible wound with hidden stitches. Anyway she's 4 1/2 now and absolutely fine. They look so helpless and trusting so they put you mentally through the ringer but that's what loving your dog is all about. ;D
Re: We've set the date Its two weeks today. Thinking positively, that's two weekends of walks before she has to take an enforced rest. My mission: to find the longest, muddiest, wettest and sniffiest walks over the next two weekends. I like the idea of going in with her. Thanks for that idea.
Re: We've set the date It's so good to read these posts, I'm in the same position Hollysdad - Willow is 7 months and I'm trying to get a suitable date when I can take a few days off to be with her. I am dreading the thought of it, my other 2 labs are/were boys and it didn't really seem as bad but the thought of her going through it is worrying but I know she will be fine and as you say - think pawsitive and we'll all get through it.
