Dexter was taken to the emergency vets this evening due to a lump on his throat.
When the doggy day care lady dropped him off he didn't have a lump but when my husband got home he noticed it straight away, it's on his right hand side just under his chin (lymphnodes) we took him straight to the vets who confirmed that although he has a temperature it's not a throat infection or anything because it's restricted to one side of his throat, this enlarged gland is huge easily the size of my fist.

The vet is pretty stumped, he doesn't think an infection because of the localisation, he said he usually sees it when a dog eats a bee and gets stung but it's not really bee season.

He gave him 2 injections - 1 -antibiotics and 1 anti inflammatory for the pain, we gotta keep an eye on him for 24 hours and if no change in lump or if he doesn't perk up (he's really down) we gotta go back for X-rays, endoscopy and maybe surgery depending what they find!

We are supposed to be going to the Berlin Christmas markets on Saturday for a long weekend but may have to cancel depending how Dexter is, I don't want to leave him if he is this poorly :(

You poor things, and poor Dexter! I do hope that the lump goes down.

If not a bee maybe some other kind of biting thing...?

    Hope he recovers very quickly.

A rapidly swelling lump in this area could be a salivary cyst - worth a mention to your vet if it doesn't go down quickly.

Thankyou for all your kind words, The lump hasn't changed but Dexter is still eating and drinking. It's obviously painful as he cant do his whole body shake that he usually does.
He's very dopey today, I rang the vet to update on his condition and they said the anti inflammatories can have that effect of making him sleepy but also could be whatever the infection is. The injections were pretty strong so we have to wait until this evening to give him his next course.

I'm entirely unsure of what to do, if he needs an X-ray they will take him and sedate him at 1430 today but we will keep an eye on him until the time to see if there's any change I don't want to put him through sedation if it's not necessary!
