Well it had to happen no way we were going to get away with it no matter how hard we train and today was the day :'( We took Hattie & Charlie to the woods for a walk, Charlie did his burn off across the field, we then proceeded into the woods, he was full of energy today running, running, running with the usual check in on us but no real mooching, Hattie attempted to keep up bless her no chance. We stopped to check out a path we hadn't used before and as we did through a gap along a fence a Deer shot past across a field, Hattie & Charlie off like Greyhouds out of a trap, we blew our stop whistle continuously as discussed earlier in the week and not a damn thing happened not even Hattie responded they were gone for 5 minutes :'( Charlie was doing a funny half bark as he ran off never heard that before must have been excitement, they did come back together. Hattie's behaviour has deteriorated a little since we have been joining David and Charlie, it's also shooting season so many Pheasants around, my worst time of year I absolutely detest it. To top it all I slipped over so have sore writs and hurt my very enormous bottom (2 penny buns in a hanky is how my Mum always described it ;D) consequently I was covered in mud and Charlie cut his foot What a terrible walk and now we just don't really know what to do as I think Charlie should be described as 'abnormal' and when will he give us a break, we are gutted :'( :'( xx
Re: What a DISASTER Firstly , hugs coming for your poorly wrists and bottom xxxxxx Helen, it happens to the best of us, honestly it does . I know you be feeling pants and rightly so, but tomorrow is another day , you have been doing so well with Charlie , tremendously so , and one bad walk wont have ruined everything , chin up and I don't believe for one moment that you have a big bottom
Re: What a DISASTER Thanks Kate, I hope tomorrow will be better frankly it couldn't get any worse I always feel these awful things only happen to us. Thank you about my bottom it truly is the smallest bottom in hampshire hence it is still hurting, note to self, must buy padded trousers ;D xx
Re: What a DISASTER Really sorry that you had a rubbish walk I honestly don't think you can 100% proof any pet dog in those situations. Trained working gundogs, yes, but not the average pet dog, no! It's made worse that meeting that type of wildlife doesn't happen that often so it is even more exciting! If it makes you feel any better, my two would have done that even if it was just a rabbit that had run across in front of them Chloe
Re: What a DISASTER Ouch Helen ,sorry you've been hurt and really sorry you had a chase situation....you have my fullest sympathies especially this week, did they go out of sight?total nightmare isn't it...... We were at a party yesterday and one of our friends is South African and her family have a game reserve, their JRTs all chase the livestock, one was even killed by a warthog she couldn't understand why I was so bothered..... she was like ',that's just what dogs do!' I'm off with a long line this week to hunt some deer down....not to chase just to look at them ! Don't lose heart.....I don't know Helen....we can give this a good try but it is going to take time and it some blood ,sweat and tears and it doesn't half make you anxious, big hug xxx Er you were writing while I was It IS NOT JUST YOU.... The Roll Call of Shame ....( sorry fellow members you know I only mean it kindly to help Helen ) Lilly,Simba, ( New entry this week) Dexter, even Benson took himself off the other week, but at least he went home! Xxx
Re: What a DISASTER Aww....Charlie! You blotted your copy book Sorry to hear you so disappointed. As you know it is a steep learning curve. Look at the plus points. Most of our dogs would have responded like Charlie in that situation....really. And they both came back. Relatively unscathed. Lilly headed off after a rabbit this morning. It had sense and ran thru a dense hedge though. Hope you are feeling ok. And Charlie's paw is all right too. And tomorrow really IS a new day
Re: What a DISASTER I absolutely agree with everyone's sentiments..actually thinking...pheasants...deer..with Benson?? Not a hope in hell in keeping him close, and Casper, well may as well open a flask of tea, set down and make ourselves comfy till he returns...

Re: What a DISASTER Sorry you've had a horrid experience, Helen. Even perfect Miss Poppy has been known to take off after a cat - across a road!!! Don't feel bad, we all have those dreadful days, and we just carry on? Hope your bottom is feeling better!! Xx
Re: What a DISASTER
Sorry you've had a horrid experience, Helen. Xx
What Head Girl Poppy? No,I don't believe it,you are just trying to make us feel better Karen ;D
Re: What a DISASTER No, really, she did, it was awful! All my fault, she wasn't on the lead and we were chatting to neighbours outside their gate when the cat ran across the road. Pops was after it like a small heat-seeking missile, completely deaf to my shouts - just lucky for us it's a quiet road with few cars!! It can happen to anyone.
Re: What a DISASTER Oh Helen I can only repeat what everyone else has said. I was going to say if I had a pound but forget that if I had 1p for everytime my dogs have done something like that, lulled me into a false sense of security then bang everything goes wrong Id be mega rich. I know exactly how your feeling. I bet everyone does. Disappointed, frustrated basically fed up about it. However they were only gone 5 minutes, they both came back together, most importantly THEY CAME BACK IN FIVE MINUTES. Correct me if I'm wrong but once upon a time I'm sure Charlie would have done a bunk for a lot longer than that. Charlie is not 'abnormal' he is definitely 'normal' there aren't many dogs who wouldn't have done the same certainly none I know. Tomorrow is a new day, forget whats happened and take your dogs for a walk and let Charlie make up for his little slip up.
Re: What a DISASTER Oh Helen, sorry you feel so down. Honestly, if this had been me posting this story the heading would be SO PLEASED!! and I would be gushing about how happy I was that Simba had come back after ONLY 5 minutes. Charlie has come such a long way, but he is never going to respond perfectly in every scenario, just like we as humans are not always on our best behaviour all the time. Don't despair, this was just a little blip and tomorrow is definitely a new day.
Re: What a DISASTER I'm really glad Charlie came back, Helen, and I hope the bumps and scrapes heal up soon.
Re: What a DISASTER Sending you big hugs Helen {{hug}}. I agree with everyone else.......all dogs (except working dogs) will run off at some stage. Harley ran off a few days ago to play with another dog who I know is really rough and OTT with her. No matter what I did - Whistle, call, hold a treat, waving a ball......none of it stopped her running off at full pelt. It took me running after her and another 10 minutes trying to catch her!! I was soooooo annoyed ;( Tomorrow is another day and you have all been doing sooooooo well xx
Re: What a DISASTER just one word Helen - Brodick! All of my friends with pet labradors have chase incidents, thankfully brodick has not been off lead in the presence of a deer yet but I know for sure what would happen. And I don't think he is abnomal, its instinctual...agree with everyone else. Id be pleased if Brods returned in five minutes from a deer chase I suspect he'd end up in the next county....
Re: What a DISASTER I hope you are starting to feel better. Have a good night's sleep; fresh day tomorrow !
Re: What a DISASTER What a stress, you poor thing. And falling over too. With Charlie, I can only echo everyone else. He's normal. Even Hattie ran off. And they both came back in far less time than Charlie would've a year ago. My previous dog used to chase kangaroos. I couldn't do much about it if he saw one. I'd just wait till he realised he'd never get near it as they are far too fast for a Labrador (at this point he'd be a black dot on the distance) and then he'd turn back. 5 mins is usually about how long the episode would last for. Just think of where you've come from with Charlie. He's a million times better than he was
Re: What a DISASTER Helen, to chase is quite normal! I was out with a very sedate Curlycoat a couple of weeks back and two deer suddenly appeared and the Curlycoat was off, thank heaven my dog didn't seem them as he would have been off as well. It is difficult to teach dogs not to chase deer as there aren't many around to proof them with. You will be more aware next time, meantime there is nothing to beat yourself up about! xx
Re: What a DISASTER Hi Helen. Much sympathy and hope the bruises are not too bad. All I can say is what the others have said. In my case it was dog enters strangers kitchen and steals chicken off table and runs of with it. So there you go ....... ;D
