    Hi.

I have izzy she is 11 weeks old. I just feel the toilet training is going nowhere !! And I really need it to be going somewhere !!! We use a crate at night no issues there last wee around 12ish till 7.30. But durning the day her wee times are so unpredictable ! We have had an accident yesterday and today. So I am bring her out every half hour every 10 if she takes a drink. Sometimes she will wee other times she doesn't. But yesterday and today I have brought get out and she has weed come inside and put her down and she wees on the floor ??

Surely at this stage she should be doing a little bit better. All her poos are outside. No accidents in the crate. But then sometimes she can go 2 hrs with out weeing even do I am bring her out every 30 mins.

Is this normal ? Am I expecting to much of her ? I really thought she would of had the general idea of it now ?

    Thanks.

Some pup's take a lot longer than others and if I was being perfectly honest it sounds like you are getting on really well for a pup at 11 weeks.

    Thank you for your reply.
It is just deflating when she wees inside when you are just back in after her weeing. She did that a few times at 8 weeks but then was doing great untill 3 days ago. I know this is normal I shall carry on ! Thank you

Ah, yes, I remember the "am I ever going to be able to put this dratted mop bucket away?" days. They do get it eventually, just keep at it!

I agree with the above - if Tatze only had one accident a day at 11 weeks I was very pleased. It took her 'till 15 weeks before we really felt we had cracked it.

I think it's harder with girls as they almost sit to wee so the difference is almost indiscernible before it's too late!!

    Keep on keeping on :)

Just to agree with everyone's comments. You've probably got a few more weeks at least to go - but when it does happen every dog I've owned has then been totally reliable (unless ill of course). It's hard to remember but I think Molly was housetrained at about 14 weeks.

Can I add that if I wasn't directly interacting with the pup during the day I would crate the pup or put in a play pen area.

What are you doing to the dog when the dog empties in the house ?

I remember that! But it does get better (sometimes quite suddenly).
Although can't ever be quite sure - after five perfect weeks Pongo (age 21 weeks) has just had a pee for no apparent reason in the kitchen! :-[

Stick in there, you will soon be looking back on it as 'what it used to be like', and telling other new owners to keep their heads up!

Hi, my Murphy is 17 weeks and Fortunately he was really quick with his house training. I was doing exactly the same as you. Just a thought though, when you said izzy was doing her wee then you came in and put her down and she weed again. I wonder if you are praising her before she is finished/mid flow outside and she's stopping because she's excited to be getting praised, and then finishes when you put her down again??? I know this has happened with Murphy in the early days. I basically didn't say anything to him until he had finished his wee.

Izzy is still very young, she sounds like she's doing great xx

Pippas Happy Puppy book discusses this, she says sometimes if things aren't working you need to go back a step. Reduce the time between potty breaks again. If she doesn't pee outside, to crate puppy and try again in 20 minutes and repeat until she goes. Praise when puppy has fully relieved themselves to ensure they don't mistake the praise for emptying half way. It could take quite some time for the duration to be predictable, hang in there! You're doing great!

Ps. You're not doing anything "wrong". Growing pains, but you'll get it just persevere!

I am just lifting and putting her outside cleaning it up and then bringing her back in.

I did think I might up disturbing her in by saying hurry up. I wait untill she has completely stopped weeing and is walking away before I praise her.

I have also tried bringing the time back bringing her out every 15-20 mins and crating her if she doesn't do anything but me crating her ends in her falling asleep in there or else me bringing her out every 20 mins and nothing !!

Thanks for all your answer knowing this is normal is helping thank you.

You're doing well :) It just takes time, as everyone has said. Their ability to physically hold it in has to develop also.

Praise her and give her a treat just as the last drop of wee is falling, while she is still in the 'wee' position :)

    Hang in there!

Its so hard when they are so small. Meg is 12 weeks and has pretty much got the whole house training thing except when she has a big drink. Then it just rushes through her and she can have a spell where she goes very frequently for about an hour. Mostly we catch them but some are impossible. I just figure she will grow out of the when she is bigger and has more bladder tone. Its hard juggling with children though. I have twin boys age 5 so fitting extra wee's around the school run is fun !! :)

11 weeks is far too young for a pup to understand what's expected of it with regards to housetraining. At that age they have barely any bladder control and if they need to go they'll go anywhere they can. Just keep persevering as it sounds like your doing the right things.

You cannot expect a dog to be totally housetrained until 6 months old. Some dogs pick it up straight away but others take a little longer. My Penny wasn't totally housetrained until she was about 8 months old as she kept getting urine infections which set it back.

Just be patient. It will come with time.

With 3 children you know that you cannot toilet train until their systems are mature enough.

The really GOOD NEWS is that it happens much quicker with a dog.

Right now it doesn't seem like it, but you are almost there.
