A sort of follow up on Lochan's post on how much walking do your dogs do...how much chilling do your dogs do? I think my two get a good wack of exercise and play and thinky stuff of a day.If we are in the house brodick will normally have his Off switch in place. He is up for any games on offer, will leap up the second I go in the kitchen and appear with an Im Starving look on, will ( on the odd occassion she is lying down) occassionally leap on Cuillin and start a game, but generally he is completely chilled in the house and snoozes happily a lot of the day. Cuillin is my Perpetual Motion dog. Will crash for a couple of hours after their big walk, but then her On switch flips back and she wants to be up and at it, playing, doing ' jobs' ( finding stuff, fetching stuff, using her brain etc). Both are about same age, Cuilli three at the end of this month ( how did that happen? ! I still think of her as a pup!) brods is six months younger. I do entertain her a fair bit as I suffer from We Have No Garden guilt. She would love a garden, real outdoor girl and loves to just pootle around and sit outside in my sisters garden or friends gardens when we visit....so anyone else got a Perpetual Motion dog or have you all got Snoozers?
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house When Charlie's exercise was restricted, I had a Perpetual Motion Dog (PMD ;D ). He'd been like this as a younger puppy too. So I thought this was how he was. It was exhausting. He wouldn't settle unless he was in his pen or crate, but too much time in there made him worse. If he wasn't getting attention, had a game to play, or was doing training, he'd retrieve anything that wasn't nailed down. Counter surfing to find stuff. Constantly. Over and over. Then, at 15 months, we were all healed up and his exercise was upped and kept going up until we have settled now at 2 hours a day (it is not very high energy 2 hours, the intensity is increasing now). Then he went back to training and on the weeks I can manage it, does 3 training classes a week plus 20 minutes a day or more with me. It's bliss. He does settle now. He still has "his moments" and it's not safe to leave the oven knob within reach, and the log basket (too tempting) is still out of reach, but it's much, much, better. He knows his routine though. He knows a hour before his walk times and starts getting restless and sticking his nose on keyboards and sitting on us. This is getting a bit better too as his exercise gets more energetic and he seems a little less "desperate" for his walks. How much of this is due to him growing up generally, and how much was a young dog frustrated on limited exercise, I don't know. Both, probably. In Cornwall, I don't really have a garden. Not one he can run round in anyway. Although my garden in London is small too. It makes no difference to him (in terms of his behaviour) whether or not he has access to outside space. Although having a garden is easier on me as he can go for a pee and so on if I'm tied up on other things.
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Snoozer. All day. So laid back I wonder if there is something wrong with him, but he has been like this ever since we got him at nine weeks (he's 8 months now) so I think it's just normal for Pongo!
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house A bit of sleeping, a potter in the garden as back door is always open when I am at home, a cuddle if I am sat down,a bit of training in our field, a 'find it' game indoors or outdoors, and a bit more sleeping! Chloe
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Lady (5 in September) pretty much just crashes after our morning walk. In this nice summer weather when we have the garden doors open she likes to chill in the garden watching what's going on, or sleeping in the shade either indoors or out. Every now and then she'll bring a toy for a play and I can usually oblige. If I'm working outside she plonks herself next to me and watches.
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house 50/50 snooze/awake. Harley spends a lot of time on the garden, sometimes playing, sometimes sleeping out there. If I stand up and leave the room, she will wake up and follow immediately
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house My two like a good snooze after their morning walk, but mostly like to be where I am and just potter about after me in the house or garden. They quite enjoy going to work and lazing about with the other staff pets in the office, as any mischief that goes on can rarely be assigned to an individual for blame (but we all know who is guilty don't we Lochan???). They rarely choose to go in the garden on their own apart from a regular-as-clockwork 4pm massive hoolie, or when sent out with kongs. Tarka is the most interesting in a way: fast and mad on her walks, a fizzing bundle of energy and excitement and almost unrecognisably quiet and gentle in the house albeit with a serious sock snaffling habit.
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Same as Naya 50/50. They have times when they always sleep, after breakfast, after lunch (ours) and evening. In between they potter around with things in their mouths, follow me about, go in the garden if I do, but rarely on their own though they could as patio doors open and they also have a dog door.
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Our two are quite happy to split their after walk time between snoozing and pottering , " helping " in the kitchen and garden , Millie is particularly fond of weeding , both just seem to be happy to follow me around or sleep
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Total Snoozer unless there is a call to action ;D or movement in the house then he has to come And supervise!x
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Snoozer here too. Although slips into black ninja mode if I enter the kitchen. She does seem to follow me a lot still, though just lies down somewhere close by to keep an eye on me (presumably in case I go to the kitchen without her)
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Holly has a nice routine. Breakfast, walk, sleep, lunch, short play, sleep, play, tea, walk, play, sleep, bedtime. Right now she's having her post-walk sleep. She has her head on my feet so I can't move.
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Interesting so Brods sounds pretty much like the other pups on the forum, snoozing, pottering (and following owner especially into a Potential of Food Zone) but with a readiness to get active whenever required. Little Cuilli seems a little different (in many ways, bless her Ginger Socks). She is what I believe one might call High Maintenance Dog (HMD), as well as PMD. Me and Brods love her dearly nonetheless. And her desire to constantly interact with me, though sometimes a tad tiring, means she is an absolute dream to walk. Other than a weakness for Pheasant Hunting (and a fear of groups of strange dogs running towards her, which can still cause Mass Drama if I don't intervene quickly) all she wants on walks is balls thrown/dummies to retrieve, recall/training games to play - anything that involves interacting. Running about on her own is boring for her - she has even invented her own game in the one area of their morning walk where I can trust Brodick to free run as there's nothing except butterflies to chase - as nothing is going on she waits till I've walked a good way away, sits herself down looking highly alert and regal, waits to be whistled, comes charging back, and does a beautiful pretty sit. She does this loads until we get back to Doing Stuff...so it has its benefits!
Re: What do your dogs do when they are in the house Mine does the self regal sits at a distance and either does a swift recall or I send him for a dummy. He also invents his own retrieve games, likes to have a ball in his mouth, I then notice he hasn't got it and tell him 'where's your ball' and he will go off some distance to it and straight to it
