My 4 month old lab is about to head out to hunting training. The place feeds Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20, I have him on Wellness Core puppy. Which is the better food? Haven't heard anything bad about Wellness Core. Also recently I have started adding a few blue berries to the mix.
Hi Mike - are you sending him off to a trainer for his "hunting training"? I don't think most of us here have a lot of experience of that, we generally train our dogs ourself with or without the aid of Training Classes - obedience, gundog etc - or 121 Training sessions. Is this a specific hunting training? I am sure we would be interested in hearing more. We have had some links to trainers in the US previously, and a lot of their training is a bit aversive based rather than the positive training that the forum supports. Do you know much about the type of training they use? I'm afraid I can't help much with the food - you will get as many different answers as people you ask I would guess. A good proportion of the active members are UK based so our knowledge is more UK food based, not that that really helps! You can get some advice on http://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory the All About Dog Food website, but I think there may be a better one for the US which some of our US contingent might be able to point you towards. Remember though that even these websites are based on a lot of opinion so you have to interpret it all carefully. Is there an option of continuing to use your existing food?
Its upland game bird and waterfowl training. The trainer is all about positive reinforcement. They want the owner to be there as much as possible. Yes I can supply the food he is currently on.
Ah that is good. So I am guessing lots of water-retrieves? No idea what upland game birds are LOL Do you hunt and shoot yourself? Not sure how it works. You shoot, dog picks up, just you in the team? We had some interesting posts previously from a chap in Norway and his dog Balder - he hunted ptarmigan. There are some fab photos on his thread, as well as some hunting videos http://thelabradorforum.com/threads...ador-behaviour-the-adventures-of-balder.7764/ You might enjoy taking a look at his thread.
