Don't get me started on my Eco Warrior rant about how dog owners should keep their dogs OUT of ponds where amphibians are spawning...

Karen, my garden is very very eco friendly, no pesticides ever used, bird feeders and boxes everywhere , hedgehogs welcome etc .
However , when you have two fish ponds and both full of spawn , plus a dog who has always drunk water from the ponds, its easier said than done to keep everything safe .
At one point, we netted both ponds, mainly to deter herons , but then we found that little garden birds got under the netting and became trapped in it, which was quite horrendous to see, plus frogs got trapped and died, so the netting had to go . I would never ever encourage Sam to eat frogspawn, but unfortunately , I cant watch him every waking moment and thankfully, it is not a regular habit :)

Frog spawn is bad, but dog poo has to be worse, why do I have to have a dog who still likes the odd snack on it, occassionaly at eleven months yuck ! And as for the cat poo in the garden yuck yuck ! Maggie x

Karen, it was a large lake and we didn't see it to start with! I do stop them going into the small pond which had so much last year, the weather was so cold that the frogspawn froze and this year there is non to see.

Today's eaten frogspawn was from a strange site. Not really a pond, but an area of field which had flooded over the winter and which has gradually reduced in size to a large puddle about 1.5m diameter and 20cm deep. Loads of spawn in it (although somewhat less now....) and quite a large number of dead tadpoles with just a few live ones. Strange place to pick for the frogs when there are large areas of permanent pond within 30m of this site.

More like tapioca, I would think. Just guessing, having not tried frog spawn myself.

::) ::) ::) Well, the bloomin' frogs could do their bit by not spawning in puddles that dry up - that's all I can say! Darned careless, those frogs.

Before I get a huge hard time about frog preservation again, I seriously do my bit - I have been known to water a puddle with frog spawn in it!

    Heehee me too, Julie!

Absolutely thrilled because I have lots of frogspawn in the two ponds in my garden this year. Some is in an aquarium in my kitchen - the tadpoles will be released when big enough to escape the voracious newts in the ponds.

I thought of creating a 'Frogspawn' thread along the lines of Rachael's 'Ducklings', but decided that would be one step too far along the weird continuum. Worse than the knitted dishcloth thread.

Karen, watch it!! You're heading into dangerous territory...."knitting" and "worse" do NOT belong in the same sentence..... :D
