    Hi guys!

I'm a newbie to the forum *waves* to everyone! :)

We are collecting our little black lab, Bob, in a few weeks time and I'm just clearing an area of flowerbed/garden for him to use as his 'place' to go. I wondered if I could put some bark chippings down for him on top of the soil? I'd rather he didn't have to stand/sit straight on the soil as he'll get muddy. Or should we put some turf over it perhaps?

    Any advice appreciated!

    Thank you kindly.

    Louise

    Welcome Louise :)
I have a feeling that some types of ornamental bark can be toxic to dogs if they eat it, so I might stay away from that option unless you find out the 'right' kind :)
How about putting some turf down and some edging/small fence round an area and train him to go there that would be fine. Maybe easier to pick up from grass rather than bark too ;)

Look forward to seeing photos of Bob :D

Hi Kirriegirl, thank you for your advice. I rather like the idea of a little white picket fence round a turfed area.. that could be nice! I'll have a look round the garden centre at the weekend and see what they have.

How do I upload photos onto here just out of interest?

    Louise

Hi and welcome from me and red fox lab, Harley - 13 months old :)

I would probably use turf as well. Not so much chance of getting so muddy ;)

If you go to the technical section, there are a lot of descriptions of how to upload photos :)

Hi from another newbie. We've had our puppy Lemmy 4days now. We have a concrete patio area and grass. What I have done is this, on first day I was going outside with him onto patio about once an hour. Every time he performed I say repeatedly "go wee" even for poop then as I've learned his body language I started to pre empt him so when he is out after waking or eating etc I don't play until he has gone wee. As of yesterday he performs when I say it. So far only 2 small wees in house and that was first two nights he was on own. He does seem to go in same place on concrete so going on a puppy performing patch with a fence seems plausible. Good luck with new addition. X

Hi and welcome to the two of you! I think I would go for grass too as long as it's not too far from the door. Enjoy your new puppies :D

I have shredded bark in a fence off area, had it for my previous German Pointers and it hadn't been used for 9 months since the last one died, now my two and a half year old Lab has decided to use it, bliss :) Someone suggested pea gravel which sounded a good idea.

    Welcome!

It's a really good idea to have a fanced off area which you can hose down, this avoids scorched grass. The puppy is much easier to train, too, because s/he knows exactly where to go - not just a vague 'anywhere outside'.

Gypsy was completely clean and dry inside by 12 weeks old - I am sure this is because we had a designated 'spending area'.
In her case it's stone slabs - easier to keep clean.

You can see a bit of astraturf in the photo, but I soon threw it away, it started to stink even when hosed and Gypsy didn't need it anyway.

    :)

    Hi welcome to the forum.

Bouncer my Black Lab pup goes to the toilet on or near some stone slabs next to my shed. I didnt make him do it there, he chose that area himself.

As for uploading Photos you need a file sharing site to host your piccys & then you link the phot from there. I use Photobucket.com.

Unce uploaded to the site you will have various codes to link the photo to it, you need the "img" code to post in a reply.

Here is Bouncer saying Hi to you

I have a fenced in area for Cooper to play in and created a sort of "sand box" with grass in it for him to go. So, of course, he does NOT go in the sand box, but pees in the fenced in area AND poos on the gravel going into the fenced area!!! Totally my fault as I should have taken him to the sand box!!! Good luck.....and be consistent....but you will have to take your pup to the area you designate for it.

Thank you to you all for your helpful replies. It is lovely to 'meet' you all, everyone seems really friendly here! ;D

The area that we've designated for pooping used to be a flower bed (I literally dug it over today to make a space) so it's about 3ft by 6ft... I'm thinking if this is JUST where we encourage him to go, then that is an OK size? Do you think gravel may be a good option? Only that we can spray with water periodically and it'll drain down through the earth? I'm wondering from the replies given that maybe a very small patch of grass will start to look pretty grim after a while as the wees will be quite concentrated on it.....?!)

Thank you once again.. I'll try and get that photo application. Hello Bouncer! What a little cutie pie!
