Met two very handsome labs in the woods today and as a result Riley has a bitten ear - luckily it's fairly superficial although still oozing a little

Didn't even get an apology only the question 'is your dog male?'

Now I know intact males might have to sort things out a little but this an area frequented by numerous dog walkers and other recreational users and even the mild implication that because my dog is intact gives this guy some kind of free pass to not have control over his dogs makes me somewhat miffed!

Luckily a good bellow at them all broke them up and Riley legged it behind me first chance he got with me shouting at this pair of dogs who stood there hackles up all along their backs.

Just about to wash his ear with cooled boiled water, any other action I should take? This is my first dog bite :-\

Poor Riley :( you did the right thing having a good yell but what a rude owner  Washing it as you sounds like the right thing to do but obviously if it's still oozing tomorrow a trip to the vet as it could become infected pretty quickly. I am so sorry you had this horrid experience Barbara and just because Riley still has his crown jewels, it's not on at all. Give Riley a hug from us xx

How awful! Hope he's ok- ear bites can be nasty. Yes, I think I'd be heading towards the vet if at all concerned tomorrow. Sounds like the dog equivalent of a hit-and-run car accident. Despicable behaviour

It's just not on. I would be mortified if my dog bit another and would be all apologetic and concerned. Bet they aren't on this forum

Injuries to ears can be worse than they first seem so might be best to get it checked just to be on the safe side - my friends two vizslas had a scrap and one ended up with an ear torn right through from base to tip. Had to have it sewn and stapled back together.

If it appears relatively minor just bathing it twice a day should be ok.

Oh no :( can't believe some owners.....don't like to take responsibility for their dogs and will find any excuse for their behaviour
I would bathe his ear and see how it is tomorrow. Big tummy rubs from me x

That's horrid! Poor Riley. Have you got some hibiscrub? I use it diluted to clean cuts and grazes.

Was just about to suggest Hibiscrub too , well diluted , or boiled cooled salt water .
Poor Riley, its really upsetting isnt it ? Its just not on either to blame an entire dog, just because others are not under control , hug the boy for me x

Well he's still installed under the high chair so it hasn't affected his appetite!

I've bathed it and it really does look like just a scratch, hopefully we'll meet some nice dogs out and about tomorrow. I've got some hibiscrub so will bathe it in some diluted before bed.

    Thanks everyone x

Good to hear his appetite is intact but what a horrid experience for you both.

Re: Why is it ok for your dog to bite mine because mine is an intact male

This has happened twice to my older intact male. The first time I got a load of verbal abuse. The second time my husband took pictures of the owner and dogs involved and the incident had been witnessed by others. The owner paid all vet bills.
I have no idea why other dog owners use the fact that the dog has not been neutered as an excuse for their dogs bad behaviour. I think the myths spread about the benefits of castration don't help matters. My dog is a big gentle softy and never been a problem around other dogs. He is now quite nervous around staffies and other bull breeds which makes walking him in highly dog populated areas more challenging.
Ear wounds can be more prone to infection and difficult to stop oozing. I'd bathe in salty water and put a bit of manuka honey on until I could see the vet.
Hope your boys ok with no nasty after effects.

I'm so cross for Riley! Grrr....

Hope he is ok. Big tummy rubs from us.

About the intact male thing - I think there is definitely something in castrated dogs being aggressive towards intact dogs (I have only met about a dozen intact male dogs but all of them have been fine with Charlie). I spoken to a few owners who walk up at the common with intact males who have similar complaints.

I don't know maybe it happened because there were 2 dogs and just Riley and it was nothing to do with being intact or not ??? An intact male may have a go on another day who knows, too many things can come into play. I think to say there is definitely something in castrated dogs is a generalisation and needs statistics and a bit unfair towards neutered dogs :(

It would be a dull world if we can't repeat our experiences. :) That's all I was doing. With the think highlighted to underline it as an opinion. I think this is fair.

Possibly but the first thing out of the owners mouth was to question if Riley was male. Either way he wasn't even vaguely in control of his dogs and that's the problem here (along with his poor manners)

When you see the extent to which people on the forum go to in order to have well trained, safe dogs it irks me no end that someone who clearly knows his dogs can behave like this has done very little if not nothing to manage or retrain his dogs.

Sadly I thought of many, many things I wanted to say to him after I had left the scene of the crime in an attempt to prevent a reoccurrence!

Ah, I knew I had read something about this. I won't cut and paste for copyright, but Ian Dunbar has this to say:

    * Castration does not make dogs less inclined to fight
    * Instead, castration reduces the desire for other dogs to pick fights with your dog
    * Castration removes the source of testosterone, the male sex hormone which makes male dogs smell male.
    * Thus, castrated males appear to be less of a threat to other males, which consequently will be less aggressive and combative towards your dog
    * In a sense, castration makes your dog appear to be less obnoxious to others

So, if the above is true - intact dogs smell more "obnoxious" to castrated dogs than other castrated dogs. They should also smell obnoxious to other intact males though so that doesn't explain it all*....but I wonder if there is a tendency for owners of more "wimpy" dogs to keep them intact... ;D ;D ;D

    http://moderndogmagazine.com/articles/neutering-fact-sheet/255#sthash.4zfuXsyN.dpuf

Added- * I mean an experience of more aggression castrated towards intact, not generally, intact to intact dog aggression is still the biggest problem according to the article.

My boys are castrated, I know lots of Labs who aren't and so far all get on, so I think it has nothing to do with whether Riley is castrated or not; dogs fight sometimes and the owner should have been apologetic and offered to pay the vet bill if it is needed. My poor GSP had her ear torn off, had to have 36 stitches but I was very concerned about the dog who had done it, I was scared they would have him put down. He just bit her with no provocation at a style, but I knew he had a sad history, so forgave him. The owners were mortified.
