I've decided to have a go at Total Recall. Bess is quite good at recall except when she is playing with other dogs. I thought she was improving with age but last week whilst she was having an energetic chase with a spaniel pup they ended up in the car park (this is not quite as bad as it sounds as it is not really used as a car park). I ended up having to go and collect her as she was too far away to respond to my voice. So whistle and special food have been purchased, I've read the relevant chapters and I'm about to start. Alice
Re: Wish me luck Good luck Alice , you are definately doing the right thing , I think many of us forget that recall must be enforced on a regular basis, its too easy to relax and think we have cracked it and then they show us very plainly that we havent
Re: Wish me luck good luck and know how you feel...had a similar incident with Brodick and a cat the other day. and we are far along the Total Recall path, but I have never tried cats as a distraction before. It all went out the window.....
Re: Wish me luck Good luck Alice....I really enjoyed doing it....oh yes and Dexter was naughty this morning.....Kate is exactly right, you have to keep practising and reinforcing,I'm realising that. I knew exactly what he was going to do and where he was going to go......over the crest of a sand dune to get to 2 dogs we know...it was my fault, his recall is really good and I just thought I would allow a bit more distance before I pipped him.....bad judgement Angela and pipped to late...he was gone, but always in sight.....I've got to work up to distances and up reward value to succeed . I felt a div because he'd ignored me in front of someone :-[ and then even more of a div doing star jumps and running in zig zags away from him AND then rewarding him when he came over to me........other owner says 'why do you reward him when he's been naughty?'oh were do you start !!!! ;D
Re: Wish me luck Good luck Alice, we are almost there so keeping just about everything crossed Helen x
