We've just bought a new rug in our living room - and Stanley wee'd on it!

He hasn't had an accident in the house for months, at least three.

Is he marking? Now he's done it will that be the end of it? I'm so angry at him right now

Yep, it's marking. Be sure to clean up with a bio detergent.

When you say a new rug, did you have a rug before? We have hard floors throughout, removed the rugs when Willow arrived and they didn't see carpets until they were house trained - but then had to be house trained on the carpets. They didn't seem to understand the same rules applied.

No we've never had a rug before.

But his doggy day care has carpets and my mum & dads & OH's all do and he has no accidents there.

Just going to have to keep a super close eye on him around the rug.

We've been holding off buying it until he was fully reliable, it's been down less than an hour - typical

It's because it's new - and he is older. So he marked it. It's normal. It's not the rug, well it is because it's a new thing, but the risk is the same for anything similar.

With young males you need to get into the habit of watching them around new things that come into the house for quite a while. You also have to watch them in other people's houses, the vet's, P@H....

It's an extra layer on the toilet training that's needed, and it is not at all unusual to have to do this. You just view it exactly the same as toilet training but there is a very specific trigger to wee in the house.

    Thanks everyone!

Hawk eyes on Stanley on the rug. Hopefully it won't smell. Gunna get some proper carpet cleaner tomorrow.

Lesson learned for the future - I expected a chew, but not a piddle.

Stanley was just "fixing" it for you. Mission accomplished. :p

When Brogan was young and I'd give his Mama Jodhi (my other dog) a bath, I'd have to watch him very carefully for the first couple days because he wanted so badly to wee on her until she smelled "better "again. Let's put it this way, I didn't always catch him in time. Eau de Brogan...lovely. o_O

Ah I bought a new rug a couple months ago and Axel had a massive wee on it. That was the first and the last time so I just assumed because it was new and he was marking it as his own personal ginormous bed

Oh no! Sometimes it seems Labrador owners are never destined to have nice new things. :(
    Will it clean up ok?

That's really what it feels like. OH cleaned it up so it all seems OK.

He actually walked through the room across all the laminate to hit the rug. If you didn't laugh, you'd cry!

I thought it was only cats that did that!

I still don't have any rugs or mats down even though Ripple is over 18 months - he still eats everything .

My sympathies. WHY do dogs do this???? I mean, I love them, but the "must puke on the only thing in the house that is difficult to clean" thing is just..d'oh!

Yikes! We just bought a new rug for our living room now that Archie has been foolproof for accidents in the house. We had to get rid of all of our rugs when we brought him home as our old boy, Sam, had peed on all of them while he was on steroids for his brain tumour. We knew that Archie would smell Sam's pee on the rugs even though we couldn't!

I've been so caught up in trying to teach him that his chews can't go on the new rug that I hadn't considered that Archie would think he could use the new rug as a pee pad!! It is so darkly coloured that he may have already and we just can't see it!! Uh oh!

I'm glad I checked in today. Now to go and hunt for wet spots on the new rug...

W&S are the same. If they vom, it has to be on a soft thing. Luckily, since we have no rugs, this means o their beds, which are all washable!

Ugh! B keeps peeing on the rugs whenever I put them back down, especially the runner by the door. So frustrating. I have another runner down that she'll leave alone except for trying to eat it (it's a rag rug so strips of fabric come off - very satisfying to pull apart, I'm sure).
