These are pictures of Piper's paws. She has scabs and marks on her paws along with what looks like hair loss and red, irritated skin. I'm not sure if this is mange or if she has allergies? Does anyone have any info on what could be causing this, or have had any similar situations? She's been itchy lately, but she doesn't have fleas.

Hi Abby, only 'Forum Supporters' can upload pics directly (this involves paying a small membership fee). But you can upload photos that are hosted on an external site, like Flickr. There is some info in this thread on how to do that: http://thelabradorforum.com/threads/photo-uploading.12172/

In the meantime though, it sounds like a visit to the vet is in order, as soon as possible. Have you seen her chewing or licking at her feet?

Thank you. I'll try that. Yes she has been chewing and licking at her feet.

Brogan had both allergies and mange as a small puppy. The only way to tell the difference in his case was the vet doing a skin scraping and looking under the microscope. I'd vet trip it is!

I finally got the pictures to work. Allergies or mange? I can't get her to the vet for a few more days, but if anyone seems to think this is mange then I will take her to an animal hospital asap.

    Poor thing.
I don't know what mange looks like but that looks really irritating - I would say visit to vet sooner rather than later
    :(

Looks to me like that is the result of licking and chewing, which would suggest an allergy. It's really important that this is treated by a vet asap because she would be super uncomfortable with this and because if you don't treat it the result of this kind of licking and chewing is permanent changes to the skin (eg thickened, 'elephant' looking skin).

If you have one in your area the best option is to see a veterinary dermatologist, not just a normal vet.

Let us know how things go :)

She has an appointment tomorrow. She hasn't been acting any different, but I'm sure she is uncomfortable.

Now that I can see a bigger and clearer photo on my iPad I'd strongly encourage a vet visit as a priority. That looks pretty awful, and like she has been suffering from this problem for a while. Her head is also affected. She is in a bad state (sorry to be blunt about it) and needs attention quickly.

Just read your post - that is great that she has an appointment tomorrow.

Dogs are very good at hiding their pain and discomfort. Dogs can be in a lot of pain and they can still hide it. So it's important not to rely only on a dog's behaviour when trying to work out how serious something is. So you are right - she is definitely very uncomfortable.

Your dog really looks to be in a quite a state, poor girl - you absolutely have to get her to a vet tomorrow. I hope you get something that helps her. Poor dog.

Yes I adopted her a few weeks ago and she had been in bad shape when the shelter got her. She had scratched portions of her fur off from having so many fleas, so a few of the sores were already there. The redness and more sores have only developed over the last week or so. But does anyone think this looks like mange at all?

It could well be mange, but she'd probably need a sample taken to be able to diagnose it.

If it's mange it can be treated, and the sooner the better. Mange is usually caused by mites, so treating it is a matter of killing the mites (you will need your vet's help with that because a diagnosis has to be made and the right treatment given).

Oh the poor thing! She looks like she must be so uncomfortable. Hopefully the vet will sort it ASAP.

Unfortunately Piper has demodectic mange, but the vet said we caught it pretty early. She is on some antibiotics and a new, less harsh treatment for mange. The vet said she should be feeling and looking better in about a week, but treatment will be 3 months. Thanks everyone for your input!
