I think I was lucky that she has a bladder like a camel . Every dog is different and some are very quick with being house trained, others take a bit longer. She also sleeps with me and my hubby and has done since she was 10 weeks old. The only downside is she takes up so much space - we had to buy a king size bed to allow us some room. I must admit I love waking up to her cuddled up to me.

[/quote] You don't have to use a crate overnight You can have the pup on a bed in your bedroom, or on your bed, or in a crate in your bedroom or anywhere you want in the house. Personally I'm a fan of having dogs in the bedroom - I think they like to be with us. My dog sleeps on our bed. Basically the more you can arrange it so your pup toilets outside and the more rewarding you can make that, the faster toilet training should be. But accidents are inevitable and are not a big deal. You will work out how often and when to take him outside. Two hours in a crate is fine - you just need to build up to that slowly and also gradually get him used to being alone for periods of time.

I was just worried that if I let him sleep with me on the bed it will take more time to toilet train him and may have bad influences in terms of Saparation Anxiety. Is there any downside about letting sleeping with me together?.. like he will pee on the bed instead of waking me up.

I think it would one of the options to fully housetrain&toilet him and then I might let him sleep with me later on as he grows.. did you have any accident on your bed or anywhere in your bedroom at all while you guys sleep? My concern is that he might think that he doesnt have to wake me up to go pee as he as a lot of space to go for that in a room as well as on the bed.

But there will always be the possibility of a messy bed sometimes as all dogs throw up/have the runs in the night at some time in their life. The only way to be prepared for it is to have clean sheets and covers at the ready! It's years since I had a dog on my bed as I have become such a light sleeper, the slightest sound wakes me up. But my lovely Boogie (who I name myself after) slept on our bed and there were very few accidents. But there are never going to be none - and up to 4 months they much more likely, of course

I don't have my dogs on my bed, but when I bring them home as tiny puppies I have a cardboard box next to me bed, I can dangle my hand in to comfort them and I found that if they wanted to go to the loo, they would alert me and I would take them out. Never had any accidents. When older they went in a crate overnight downstairs. During the day they would voluntarily go into the crate to sleep, saw it as their den, I would then close the door once they were asleep, so introductory to the crate seemed to be seamless.

Juno was crated from day 1 with no problems, but she spent the first 10 nights in my bedroom in her crate to help her settle (she cried the first night as I turned off the kitchen light hence the move of her crate upstairs). I'd never allowed a pup to sleep in my room before but decided I didn't want my new little girl to cry (no doubt after reading the Happy Puppy Book)After that she was in her crate in the kitchen. Athough I didn't set my alarm, as some new puppy owners do, woke every couple of hours and took her out for a wee. I, personally, do not agree with a dog sharing my bedroom or bed which also has the benefit of preventing Juno from going up and down the stairs, something to consider as your pup grows.

Honestly, I dont really worry about my room and bed getting wet as I have a carpet shampoo machine, but my concern is that it might affect the whole housetraining concept. but it seems to be fine then.. thank you so much for your comment and advice. I think I can be a bit patient about sleeping together if I have to

[/quote] No it won't - they all have plenty of accidents, whatever toilet training route we take Some are just accident-free earlier than others. Remember to use a biological cleaner like Simple Solution as all other cleaners smell like wee to pups and encourage them to wee there again.

I think I can be a bit patient about sleeping together if I have to [/quote] To get him comfortable with going in to his crate, throw some nice tasty treats for him to find and eat starting at the entrance point and then as many others as you like and do this several times during his first hours with you in his new home. I used some of Juno's normal kibble from her meal allowance. I also gave Juno a worn jumper of mine to cuddle up to as she had spent 4 hours cuddled up with me in the car on the journey home. You could also ask your breeder if they have an old towel, piece of vetbed or something similar which could come home with your puppy which has mum's smell and that of his litter mates. All helps in the settllng in process.

I just want to add to the enthusiastic comments about vetbed - I thought it looked really expensive when I first saw it but it is worth every penny, and excellent for a very young pup. It is very tough, very soft and machine washable. For Pongo's first few weeks with us his bit of vetbed was his best thing in the world - bed, enemy-to-fight-with, cuddle, and favourite chew-toy all rolled into one. We got one big bit and cut it into two, one for his bed and one for the car. Both bits still going strong!

I really think I should get one but I will purchase a big enough one as Lab grows too fast. thank you for your comment .. I will definitely get one later.
