Do you leave the radio on and give him a tasty Kong? It might help to keep him busy and settle him down.
I use dry food and put a bit of warm water on it too, not soaking it though. I haven't given tinned food, mainly because it may cause problems...
Maybe he's expecting more chicken as starters? :)
In addition to all the previous suggestions it would be useful to walk him on a lead to see if he is calm then. Let us know how you get on.
